The grand final of the Awesome Walls Leading League took place at Awesome Walls Sheffield on Saturday 2nd April. Now in its second year, the league saw its highest number of entrants to date!
The competitors had already completed 3 awesome rounds of terrific technical masterpieces to gain their exclusive invitation to the final.
Who would be crowned the winners of this year's Leading League?
On the day the climbers had to complete two qualifying routes set by master routesetter James Garden. James has been chief routesetter for the whole competition and he is no stranger to hard national-standard routes having competed in multiple national and international competitions before becoming a professional routesetter.
There was a nail-biting contest in both the veteran male categories and the adult male categories.
In the veterans competition, Steve “The Pro” was looking to claim the title for a second year in a row, but Richard Wraight was putting up an excellent fight!
It all came down to the final route, a crimpy yellow 7b+ with some strenuous moves and a few slopers thrown in for good measure. With not much between them, Richard was crowned the Veteran Male winner 2016.
For the adult males it was a close contest between Dave and Leeds Climbing team member Kallum. Their final route was a tricky looking 8a+ up the SHAFF wall. A desperate few moves off a volume and through some slopers, saw Dave clinch the title ahead of Kallum.
So what a fantastic end to a great competition! I would like to thank the following: Y and Y belay glasses for providing excellent prizes for the rounds and the final, 5:10 for their support with prizes for the rounds and the final, Rafiki, who are a Czech based company, part of the Outdoor Concept group, I’bbz, Constant Climbing, Pro Balm, Eb and ABK Clothing.
Finally, a BIG thanks to all the competitors who entered, volunteer judges and belayers - all raising money for Macmillan Cancer Care!
