Over the last decade, Austrian Bernd Zangerl and the people of the village of Rakchham in India's Himachal Pradesh region have been working together to develop a sustainable, world class granite climbing area.

Bernd told UKC:

'After years of keeping this destination in the Himalaya more or less a secret, we finally decided to publish this boulder and climbing paradise with a new and different approach, which hopefully brings its effects or discussions in the climbing/sports community.

'For years I was thinking about a "sustainable tourism project" in the region and now everything is set up. We opened this place with some regulations, ideas (which the climbing community of the future hopefully will consider for all future climbing places) and put up climbs with the local community. Our goal is to avoid a future [overcrowded] scenario like we have in Magic Wood or other popular climbing places. I want to open it in a "sustainable" way and the climbers going there can support the local development.'
