Tonight's Friday Night Video documents the urban bouldering scene in Bern, Switzerland that grew out of political tensions between arch-conservative local authorities and young people in the 1990s. On bridges, stone walls and public buildings, two men known by their aliases Dr. Bomb and Dr. Bäri established counter-culture climbs and reclaimed public space, eventually producing a guidebook to the city's streets.
The limited edition Bärn Boulder Guidebook, on the brink of prohibition, evolved into a legendary myth that continues to inspire generations of urban climbers.
"You can't, based on your own fear, forbid me from enjoying these structures around town."
As Bern prepared to host the IFSC World Championships, where the first Olympic quota places were awarded for Paris 2024, German filmmaker and climber Hannes Tell created a film about the city's anti-establishment climbing history.
