Aidan Roberts has made the first repeat of Solly Kemball-Dorey's 'magnum opus', Poseidon's Wrath (f8C), at Trewethet Cliff (North), in Cornwall.
First climbed in September of last year, Poseidon's Wrath was Solly's first FA at the grade, and took him almost thirty sessions to piece together over the space of two years.
Solly, who has since repeated Aidan's 8C+ boulder Isles of Wonder SDS (f8C+), said at the time that Poseidon's Wrath was 'the hardest and best' boulder that he had ever done.
A board-style boulder, with shouldery moves on tiny crimps, Aidan described Poseidon's Wrath as a boulder that 'couldn't suit [him] better'. Having established two boulders at 9A this year, Aidan was able to bring some of that same form to Cornwall, allowing him to make an ascent of the boulder in just two sessions.
Speaking on Instagram, Aidan said:
'Whilst exploring more of the offerings of the UK's rocks this summer, the South West sat high on the list of spots to visit. I've spent very little time climbing on the coast and was impressed by the novel features it had to offer. And with a trip to Fairhead, a coastal bouldering venue, just ahead it felt like a good time to migrate from the comfort of the mountains and rivers to the sea. Safe to say that I'd have to get used to it at some point with the long voyage looming'.
'Regardless, first up was quite familiar territory as this area, Boscastle, is home to nature's own board and this excellent hard addition from Solly Kemball Dorey. It couldn't suit me much better. Small incut crimps and brutally shouldery! A promising flash try saw me through the three crux moves but stuck with my feet in the wrong places. Hardly a disappointment mind, this thing is really quite desperate. When I made this ascent, it remained exciting with an unnerving foot pick in the easier finish moves'.
'Top work establishing this one and thanks for the video Solly! I'd never climbed with him before and was grateful for his willingness to give me a thorough tour of the area. As previously mentioned, engaging a little more in climbing socially really felt to bear some fruit for me this season and it was great fun to explore a handful of new projects with him, bouncing around ideas for new methods and enjoying some classic crag antics. I was impressed by his climbing, definitely strong but moves incredibly well and the quantity of hard boulders which he'd developed locally to his home was astonishing'.
'I'd recommend the area to anyone willing to navigate the tides and complex coastal conditions!'
