After 8 days and 400 kilometres the 2025 Cape Wrath Ultra has reached its finale in the far North West of Scotland, with Sarah Ingram and Marcus Scotney finishing in first place.
This year's race was (for the most part) blessed with the wonderful spring weather we've been having, although conditions did begin to deteriorate within the latter stages of the race.
Sarah Ingram, a doctor (and absolute legend*) from Sheffield, finished day one in 3rd place, but made steady progress throughout the field, seemingly getting stronger each day. Sarah had struggled with a knee injury throughout the winter, which had impeded her training - and hopes of taking part in the event; however, a month before the race the pain subsided and she was able to run again. Understandably this tempered her expectations, but given the strength of her race - and the fact she seemed to get stronger as the event unfolded - it's an impressive effort, all the more so give that this is her first multi-day stage race.
* and close friend - hence the unashamed bias
We tried to contact Sarah, but owing to her being in the North West of Scotland couldn't, so contacted her friends and family instead, who had this to say:
"Sarah manages to combine steel determination with a total joy in everyone and everything she meets along the way. So very proud of this girl. Congratulations" - Gill Ingram, Mother
"Sarah has this almost unassailable positivity and is quietly, but doggedly, determined. After her knee injury, she just seemed over the moon to make it to the start line and feel like she could trust her body to run again - I'd guess she's happier with that than anything else." - Ben Davison, Husband
"I'd like to say I'm surprised, but you underestimate this absolute legend at your peril. And she's gone and done it in true Sarah style - with pure joy radiating from her at every step. Can't wait to celebrate!" - Bella Hughes, Friend and Neighbour
" Sarah is living proof that when a physio provides you with a long list of boring exercises it can be worth doing them sometimes" - Tom Abbleby, Friend
"Sarah has an ability to outperform expectations in pretty much anything she sets her mind to - so it's both impressive and unsurprising that she's managed to win her first ever multi day race. Amazing effort, with a huge amount of hard work behind the scenes - congrats Sarah!!" - Miriam Dobson, Friend
Marcus Scotney, a professional running coach based in Scotland, is no stranger to the Cape Wrath Ultra, having won it back in 2016. Having turned 50 this year he decided to re-visit the race and put in an imperious effort throughout, maintaining a strong lead from day one. Marcus has also won the infamous Dragon's Back Race and if you haven't seen it already, check out the video of him battling it out with Jim Mann for the victory within that 2017 event - it's a brilliant watch!!
