Earlier this week a avalanche hit on the 8000m peak of Shishapangma, Nepal, killing two climbers. German Sebastian Haag and Italian Andrea Zambaldi were with Benedikt Böhm, Martin Maier and Ueli Steck just 100m from the summit when they were avalanched.

Haag, Zambaldi and Maier were all caught in the slide, which killed Haag, Zambaldi. Maier survived the avalanche, and the other two climbers were not caught in the slide.

On the other side of the world renowned Swedish steep skier and aspirant mountain guide Andreas Fransson was with Canadian ski star JP Auclair when they were both avalanched and killed two days ago on Monte San Lorenzo in Patagonia.

Fransson has featured on UKC several times in the past for his cutting-edge steep mountain skiing, often with a climbing element.

JP Auclair is one of the world's top skiers and featured in the film All I Can, in the popular Street Segment.

Also in South America, and on the same day that disaster struck on Monte San Lorenzo, American Climber and Snowboarder Liz Daley was tragically killed in an avalanche on Cerro Vespignani near Fitz Roy.

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of all those involved.

Desperately sad. Fransson was a real inspiration, diametrically opposed to the stereotypical 'rad dude' of so called extreme sports. If you haven't seen it, have a look at the short film 'Tempting Fear' on Vimeo. http://vimeo.com/56317653

My condolence and deep sympathy! Thank you for the link Stefan Kruger. "There are thousand questions why. But perhaps everything is just the way it is and there can actually be peace and simplicity. It's good enough. It just is!"
