Impressive Two Day Ticklist in Magic Wood for Jakob Schubert

© Jakob Schubert

Jakob Schubert has spent two days in Magic Wood, Switzerland and walked away with a stunning ticklist. Perhaps the crowning achievement of his two-day spree was a flash of Chris Sharma's Never Ending Story (f8B+) (Font 8B+).

In addition, Schubert managed New Base Line (f8B+) (Font 8B+) and Practice of the Wild (f8C) (Font 8B+). These two problems from Bernd Zangerl and Chris Sharma respectively have seen many ascents in the 17-18 years since they were first climbed, but Schubert's ruthless efficiency is hugely impressive.

The 29-year-old also made swift work of One Summer in Paradise (f8B) (8B), Riders of the Storm (f8B) (8A+) and flashed Voigas (f8A+) (8A+), Octopussy (f8A) (8A), Jack's Broken Heart (f8A+) (8A+) and Rythmo (f7C+) (7C+).

Summing up his two days, Jakob said: "When the borders finally opened, I took the first chance to drive to Switzerland despite the really bad weather forecast. I was really motivated and convinced, we'd find some dry spots. 48h later we had successfully climbed everything that was difficult and dry. The place really plays towards my strengths and it feels like the change between indoor training and the rocks really pushes my climbing abilities."

Since lockdown ended, the Austrian competition climber has been on a rampage. Closer to home in Zillertal, he climbed Nihilist (Font 8B+) and Traumschiff (Font 8B+), as well as the first ascent of Walk the Line – a 9a route. He also grabbed the 3rd ascent of Alexander Huber's Weiße Rose at Schleierwasserfall.

Schubert is due to compete in the Olympics next year and the three-time World Championship gold medallist must be one of the favourites to be climbing's first Olympic Champion.

YES!! 2 days in Magic wood couldn't have been any better! It was a bit rainy but we still found some dry blocks 🙏 The highlight was at the end of the second day FLASHING ‚The Never Ending Story' [8B+] 🥳 Furthermore I was able to send New Base Line [8B+] ✅ Practice of the Wild [8B+] ✅ One Summer in Paradise [8a+]✅ Riders on the Storm [8a+] ✅ Voigas, Octopussy and Jack's broken Heart [all 8a] all flash Rythmo [7c+] flash • Thanks for the good times @florianklingler and @giuliano_cameroni 🙌 • I got all ascents uncut on video and will share them on my youtube channel in the next days! Stay tuned 😉 • #rockclimbing #bouldering #boulderingvideo #amazingtrip @mammut_swiss1862 @lasportivagram @raiffeisen @innsbrucktourism @heeressportzentrum @thecrag_worldwide @gloryfy

Impressive. That makes it his second 8B+ flash too. A quick Google suggests that Webb and Ondra are the only others to have flashed more than one 8b+ to date so it's a pretty exclusive group...

Watching Schubert climb, he appears to be weightless. I think there's a case to answer that he's using some sort of performance-enchancing gravity. Really impressive to see so many hard ticks in two (rainy!) days, with lots of flashes and a lot of endurance!

Looks from this list like he's only flashed one 8b+ as opposed to two? https://onbouldering.com/the-8b-flashers-club/

May well be out of date though...

Sorry, missed the more than one bit. I think Ned has 'only' flashed one of them. I think the V14 flash club is pretty exclusive too.
