© UKC News

The 2017 Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF) takes place this coming weekend, 17 - 19 March, with over 100 of the best adventure and extreme sports films on five big screens. To help you out with such a massive choice, we've picked out our top 5 climbing & mountaineering picks for you to not to miss.

1) Pete Whittaker El Cap Rope Solo Talk & Film Premiere with Wild Country

Pete Whittaker is no stranger to first ascents or pushing climbing standards. His one-day free rope solo ascent of Freerider on El Cap in November 2016 though was simply staggering and one that will likely stand the test of time. It gets even more impressive when you realise Pete only started learning rope soloing the previous year. As Andy Kirkpatrick says “the problem is, if Pete pulled it off, no one would realise just how hard it was.”

Pete will be on hand to talk about this ascent and premiere the full length film.

Saturday at 17.15. Buy tickets here.

2) BMC Climb Night with David Lama

A great night of climbing films and chat with a headline Q&A with David Lama about his attempt on the infamous SE ridge of Annapurna III - one of the last great Himalayan challenges.  Also showing will be 3 Women & 3 Old Men,a trip last year to climb three of Scotland's most iconic sea stacks (also with a Q&A) and the very funny Pete & Shauna go crack climbing.

Friday Night at 21.15. Buy tickets here.

3) Blocheads

British bouldering has a long and rich history and blocheads tells the story of how it has gone from the rag on the ground to the packed pad stack and numerous spotters. Find out how it all began, the people who gave up their ropes and gear for the freedom of bouldering, and where it is going with the current rich British boulderer scene.

Watch as part of Climb Films 1, Fri 19.00 and Sun 15.30. Buy tickets here.

4)  Jurek

Winner of multiple awards this film charters the story of Jerzy Kukuczka and the Polish climbing scene during the Communist era. A fascinating insight and portrait of a climber who was a socialist worker at home but rose to become an international climbing media star. Find out how he competed with Reinhold Messner in a rivalry to climb the highest Himalayan peaks on homemade gear and little money.

5) Dodo’s Delight

One of the films to definitely see on the big screen! A truly inspirational and funny film that showcases the big vistas of Greenland and cold waters of the artic while a bunch of friends (who just happen to be some of the best big wall climbers in the World) climb new lines at every opportunity. Whether a serious climber or just getting into the sport, this is a brilliant film to go see. Warning: It will inspire you to quit your job and sail the stormy seas
