A role that doesn’t come around that often is the Route Setting Manager of a unique centre like Westway Climbing. We are looking for a Route Setting Manager that can take on the challenge. With a passionate and highly capable inhouse setting team. The ability to get the best of the best down to set for our Competition walls and unique and eclectic events this role is at the forefront of the Westways Climbing offering.

Location Westway Sports Centre - Climbing

Salary £28k  - £35k per annum

Hours 40 hours a week.

Job purpose

As the Route Setting manager at the Westway Climbing Centre you will be responsible for ongoing high standards as well as the management of our in house and freelance setters. Ensuring customers’ needs are met and setters are used efficiently. You will be working alongside the Climbing Operations manager and reporting to the Head of Climbing.

 

Principal accountabilities

Route setting Program,

  • Maintain the high quality of route setting that Westway is known for.
  • Cultivate systems and a culture to ensure consistent grading in the centre.
  • Manager the inhouse and freelance setters for Westway Climbing.
  • To grow the centres usage through effectively run competitions and events.
  • Ensure effective communication channels are provided to customers and that feedback is used to inform the setting strategy.

Health and Safety,

  • Make sure adequate controls are in place to ensure the safety of Customers, Colleagues and Route setters.
  • Work with the Climbing Operations Manager and Head Climbing Coach to ensure that routes setting does not impinge upon the normal day to day running of the centre. 

Training,

  • Develop and maintain the training of colleagues in order to maintain a high level of route setting quality.
  • Execute the centre’s inhouse trainee setter scheme and manager the development of an inhouse setters pathway.
  • To recruit and train new setters.

Logistics,

  • To ensure an organised and robust stripping and washing programme.
  • To maintain and develop an effective hold storage solution that meets the needs of a developing climbing centres.

Route setting,

  • To maintain personal route setting standards to be an example to others.
  • Leading by example and ensuring professional setting practices and quality levels are maintained.
  • Implementing a programme of forerunning to ensure consistency in centres quality and grade.

Management,

  • Working to, and controlling, a budget for both payroll and hold/volume purchasing.
  • To support the maintenance or development of facility developments.
  • Ensuring strong and supportive line management of an industry leading setting team.
  • To be responsible for payroll management and effective budgeting.
  • To be responsible for the purchasing and auditing of holds and volumes to ensure variety and quality are maintained.
  • To lead on the inception through to execution of competitions and events to promote the centre.
  • Be the primary point of contact for external competitions such as YCS (Youth Climbing Series) and the BMC. Previously held events include the BLCCs (British Lead Climbing Championships) and national selection weekends.

Person specification,      

  • Relevant personal Indoor climbing experience, with up to date knowledge of current climbing best practice
  • A high level of experience in climbing in a range of different settings.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety within a climbing environment
  • Preferable have RSD knowledge or qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving & negotiation skills
  • Punctual, with effective organization & time management skills
  • Able to work with own initiative with a proactive & flexible attitude
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Be an Experienced route setter
  • Flexible in working hours
  • Have a heavy focus on Health and Safety concerns.
