'Kendal' is the biggest event of its type in Europe and it's the main social event for outdoor enthusiasts in the UK. As ever there'll be hundreds of film screenings including high-profile premieres plus loads of speakers and special guests making this a must-do long weekend in the Lake District.
It's looking like another top year for climbers and mountaineers, with the speaker roster including two of Europe's top women climbers. Liv Sansoz is a two-times world champion and three times World Cup winner, plus one of the first women to send an 8c+ route, while Ines Papert is another World Cup winner (four times in ice climbing) and certainly likes an adventure as her recent Scottish winter exploits confirm.
Mountain legend Fred Beckey is still climbing at 89, every day if he can. The mountaineer and author has hundreds of first ascents to his name, more than any other American climber, and recently published his magnum opus; 100 Favorite North American Climbs featuring his characteristic mix of route tips, natural history and climbing lore.
Renowned German ice and mixed specialist Robert Jasper will be the main attraction for Marmot Night, talking about his recent adventurous ascent of the 'Shark's Fin', Monte Giordano in Tierra del Fuego's Cordillera Darwin.
Another 'Shark's Fin' features in Conrad Anker's resume, with his recent ascent of Meru Central (6310m) via the Shark's Fin on the NW face with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk – his third attempt at this Himalayan prize. Conrad shares his experiences in a The North Face lecture.
Finally for now, there's the first big film premiere confirmed – Hotaches Films documented Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker's 'wide boyz' trip to the States, and this testament to offwidth pain and suffering will show for the first time courtesy of Rab and Patagonia.
Together with the art exhibitions, literature, the legendary Bike, Snowsports, White Water and Free Flight nights, the Mountain Equipment Pub Quiz plus the Boardman-Tasker literary prize, it promises to be another unmissable year. The organisers say that there are plenty of surprises they can't tell us about yet, so watch this space!
Dates are 15-18 November with tickets available next week.
