The Berghaus Adventure Challenge is about helping people who have adventure in their heart achieve their ambitions – it's what Berghaus has been doing for over forty years. For decades, the likes of Sir Chris Bonington, Mick Fowler and Leo Houlding have been a source of inspiration for everyone in the company, providing the stories, images and drama that help define Berghaus. Now, Berghaus want to help even more people achieve their own dreams of adventure.
The Challenge is now into its second year you can see some of last year's winners here. The shortlist is chosen by a panel of experts from Berghaus and Climb Magazine and then readers have the opportunity to choose the winner online.
In November 2010 UKC Reader Pete Rhodes won £2000 of support for his trip planned for February to climb the Troll Wall in winter (UKC report here). Previous winners include another UKC Reader Guy Wilson and his plan to climb Mount Hayes (4216m) in Alaska in May 2011.
The chance is open again to win £1000 in cash, and £1000 worth of Berghaus gear towards your planned adventure. So if you have an adventure that is a bit out of the ordinary then submit your application here. Remember it is adventure that counts!
September Shortlist - Voting ends on Tuesday 20th
1) Carstensz Pyramid Glacier Expedition 2011
"During my aborted 2010 Australasia 3 Peaks Glacier expedition to New Guinea's central highlands, I reached the summit ridge of Puncak Trikora (4,730m) alone, and after trekking out my 4WD vehicle was attacked by a machete-wielding local tribesman; I flew into Bime, a remote village in the Star Mountains, where no-one spoke English, to attempt Puncak Mandala (4,640m), only to be asked for $5,000 from the local headman and forced to leave; and my international agent on Carstensz Pyramid cancelled that leg with 3 days' notice. However, I am committed to achieving my original objectives and will return to New Guinea next month. The technical climb on the normal route up Carstensz Pyramid is protected by fixed ropes. However, the main challenge on this expedition is not the climb itself, but a combination of other factors: the difficult approach to the mountain, the political instability in the central highlands, and the knowledge that I will be days from help if anything goes wrong. The team will take 19 days to complete the expedition and I cannot wait to get back out there and test myself in this environment. The few remaining glaciers are shrinking rapidly due to the effects of climate change. I want to record them to help scientists understand the processes behind their demise and to document them for future generations."

2) Free Isolated Venezuelan Big Wall - George Ullrich and his team are heading back to south America again this year. "Last year my team and I had an incredible experience on an attempt at establishing a new free climb on Cerro Cathedral in Patagonia. We have now set ourselves a new and even more exciting objective - To establish a hard free climb on an Isolated Tepui (tabletop mountain) in Venezuela" - George Ullrich
3) Holloway Coast2Coast - "I plan to lead a group of 3 runners from Cleethorpes to Liverpool, using the Transpennine trail. This adventure will last for 6 days, running the full length and carrying our own gear (clothes, tent, sleeping bag, and essentials)."
