Here it is; the film that everyone's been talking about. Kendal hosts the UK Premiere of Free Solo, the amazing story of Alex Honnold's solo ascent of Freerider on El Capitan.
From award-winning filmmakers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin comes Free Solo, an intimate and unflinching portrait of Alex Honnold as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream; a ropeless ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite.
El Capitan was first climbed by Warren Harding, Wayne Merry and George Whitmore in 1958, over 47 days, via The Nose. Since then El Cap has been climbed many thousands of times, but until now no-one has dared to free-solo its 2,900ft of granite. It's just such a huge distance to maintain the levels of confidence, concentration and commitment required.
Step up Alex Honnold, whose soloing exploits have brought him to worldwide prominence. Alex's speciality is soloing big walls, and in particular gained mainstream exposure after his ascent of The Regular Northwest Face of Half Dome in Yosemite, as seen in the film Alone on the Wall. And don't forget that Honnold teamed up with Tommy Caldwell to work on breaking the speed record for the Nose. So he knows that granite pretty well...
Free Solo is an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of an athlete who challenges both his body and his beliefs. That armour of invincibility he's built up over decades unexpectedly wobbles when Honnold begins to fall in love, threatening his focus and giving way to injury and setbacks. This film sets the standard in capturing both deeply human moments, plus the climb itself with masterful, vertigo-inducing camerawork. The result is a triumph that must not be missed.
Kendal Mountain Festival (15th-18th November) is an award-winning event that has grown in size and diversity over the last 18 years. It is also the main social event for outdoor enthusiasts in the UK.
