The NEW Kendal Wall Video

Over £400,000 is being spent on the redevelopment of Kendal Wall over the next few months, and several new jobs are being created. Developments include extensive new bouldering walls, new leading walls, a 'wooden' training room, a new reception, meeting rooms and yes even a via ferrata.

Phase One of the redevelopment of Kendal Wall at The Lakeland Climbing Centre is now complete. We have now improved our provision for bouldering and improved the general facilities within the Centre. The Centre now boasts two new bouldering rooms, a training gym, a meeting room and a large multi purpose conference room. The bright new bouldering rooms offer high quality climbing suitable for both children and adults comprising of over 140 new bouldering problems on 350 sq metres of wall.

The 'Green Room' is a 4.5metre high bouldering room featuring a large cave, barrel wall and a hanging arête giving over 135 sq metres of climbing surface. This room will be used by the more proficient boulderers and is the first part of the even larger floor five extension to the bouldering which will be built during the second phase.

A dedicated training room is in place on floor 4. This has a mix of gym equipment and climbing specific training aids such as a Campus board, 30 and 15 degree system boards, pull up bars, a selection of finger boards and hanging rock rings for the climbers.

The La Sportiva room is a large multi purpose room that can be used as a corporate meeting space for lecture programs and party activities. We will be running Yoga sessions in this space.

The Den – A bouldering room that incorporates 7 meter high roped walls, a low height traverse wall and over 65 sq meters of bouldering of which there are specific circuits for young children (5 years +) 'short reach' technical climbing for youth groups and adult problems. The Den and the Green room together with our existing bouldering walls will be incorporated in our Winter Bouldering Ladder (start date 21/10/10).

The new bouldering walls will account for over 250 sq metres of new climbing wall and when added to our existing walls we will have over 350sq metres comprising of over 140 new bouldering problems..

Phase Two - We are adding even more bouldering on floor five. Building additional leading walls in the Main Hall, which will be made possible by the relocation of the reception and main entrance. Some of the new leading walls will be in excess of 24m high, once again making LCC the highest climbing wall in England. A refurbishment of the existing Main Competition Wall will also be undertaken with a view to hosting future National leading competitions and events.

Phase Three The improvement in access to the upper floors of the building will allow greater use of the space for 'aerial adventure' for the thrill seekers and have-a-go market. There will be a via ferrata leading from the ground floor to the top floor via a series of easy climbing and balancing challenges, protected by a safety cable. Visitors will be able to journey through the building overcoming challenges en route and facing incredible exposure to height then descend to the ground by an exciting 20m abseil or 30m power fan descent, possibly even a zipwire!

Local businesses involved in the development include outdoor equipment suppliers Marmot and Lyon Equipment, who are sponsoring the climbing wall through their La Sportiva, Beal and Petzl brands.

Support UKC

We need your help.

UKClimbing is a vibrant web site with rich content and an amazing community. So far, all we've asked of you is that you visit and interact with the site but we are in uncertain times. We need to look at ways to keep the site moving forward whilst maintaining our key aim of allowing free access to everyone to our main content. The site will continue to be mainly funded by a subtle level of outdoor-only advertising but we now need extra support to ensure we can continue to provide the UKC that we all know and love.

You can help us by becoming a UKC Supporter. This can be in a small way or in a larger package that includes discounted products from our sister-publishing company Rockfax.

Looks a great project. Just out of interest are there any developments around supporting disabled people into the sport or has any advice been sought on how developments could be built in. Graeme Hill
