This must be a composite shot or double exposure - unless your subject managed to stay VERY still for a long time on that rock!!! Great shot!

Great, loving the images , brings a totally new dimension to climbing photography!

are these night time bouldering shots not a bit contrived? I mean, it looks pitch black,so what is someone doing out bouldering if not to take pictures with a cool looking sky?

I would have though just a long exposure with no extra light, then introduce boulderer with a single strobe burst to freeze the climber, exposure the rock and complete the image.

Contrived? This is a great shot of a nice problem and only as contrived as the next or any photo, its better than the usual up-arse shot that most of us manage. Great to see problems in a different light (Oh yes I did just say that!) and making more of an art of it. There are plenty of purely daytime shots, so to try and present the aesthetic of a route or problem within a more conceptual image is great idea and creates something special, I think this is a justifiable motive rather than a contrivance.

The image was created in much the same way as The Big Man says. The flashes (2 in this case) light the foreground at the time when the shutter opens, then the shutter is left open to capture the sky with the foreground kept dark.
Farmus - really appreciate your comments and my thoughts are pretty much the same as yours. I set out to create something a bit different, its up to each individual viewer to decide if I achieved that and if they like the result.
