We went to Smoo Cave, with the intention of having a go at this low-grade Mick Fowler classic, 'The Hole'. Amusingly and given the climb's author, perhaps unsurprisingly, this is the state we found the route in!

Whoops, just realised this isn't a Mick Fowler route after all.

How deep is the water there and what state of tide? Lovely light btw..

Hi Alan. I'm not certain how deep the water is here, but deep enough to paddle a boat in it. The first ascentionists apparently abseiled directly from the bridge, down 'The Hole', that you see here with the waterfull coming down it - so missed having to cross this water altogether I guess. The 'SMC Northern Highlands North' guide recommends doing this in a drought, which sounds about right, but the signs at Smoo Cave also note that the cave is often in flood when a particular wind in pushing up the outflow from the nearby loch. This would make sense at it was windy, but hadn't been particularly wet when we visited. Hope that helps, Tom.

Excellent! What's with the 'fire' on the right?
Fidget - 25/Aug/11
Hi Fidget. Thanks! I think the fire is in fact just a light, they do some sort of aquatic tour through the cave, but couldn't do it for the same reason we couldn't do the route!
