This was before they installed the waiting room and the turnstiles below the little tower. I was climbing with guy who hadn't done a lot, and was consequently rather slow, and there was a party of 3 ahead of us. I wanted to make sure there was enough separation between us that we didn't catch up to them before Tower gap and we weren't moving fast enough to justify asking them to let us pass. So we dropped our packs and gave them a half hour headstart. Now that the booking system is fully implemented, I doubt that sort of thing will be needed again.....
