Johnnie Lees leading Belle View Bastion back in 1951. An atmospheric photograph!

I don`t think Johnnie Lees ever really got the credit he was entitled to for his rock - climbing/ mountaineering skills.Whether in nails, curley vibrams or more latterly,in PAs, he was a master technician. His delicacy on rock belied the fact that he was a big man!

Great stuff Ugh - I bought my first pair of PA's from Lees early in 1961 for three pounds. I only roped up with him twice for two ascents of Lavaredo and he certainly was a great technical climber.

Correction - the first time I climbed with Johnnie was Bovine in the Gwynant. I was with Ron James that day and I was the leader - Lees seemed to appear from nowhere and followed us up the climb. Ron suggested that we go and do a similar climb, Lavaredo on Carreg Alltrem, that we had recently made the first ascent.
So we drove round in the RAF Land Rover and I remember that there were at least two gates on the approach road and it my job to open them. I stood on the back of the Landy holding the bar at the top as Lees drove his fastest to try his to shake me off!
Happy days Ugh. Were we really there ?
