The Pylon King - 22/May/14
In fact isnt it technically a highball with a mat and not a solo?
The Pylon King - 22/May/14
In the database, someone has top rope soloed it.
Nice photo btw.

Nice photo btw.
No spotters and one mat? I would call it a solo.

doubt I could of hit it if I tried! looked down and thought thats int wrong place...never really noticed a difference between the two styles of ascent although the mat does add another dimension, same could be said about the helmet?

what about 10 mats?
The Pylon King - 22/May/14
I reckon soloiing is well, solo. you and the rock.

Mats are pretty irrelevant compared to the pointless farce of actually top-roping a classic easy bold slab - obviously it's going to be a let down if you avoid the challenge of climbing it normally.

Why, if you had one, would you not put a pad down? does that make it lesser of an ascent - no.

Bugger all gear on the route anyway. Surprised you could be bothered to lug a mat all the way up there, at that height it's not going to do much anyway. Maybe it could act as a preplaced stretcher if he falls?

I didn't carry it! haha :) made a nice seat for dinner

It's well worth carrying a pad up to Black Crag. IMO it has one of the best circuits of easy highball problems/ short solos in the Lakes. A lot of the routes are ideal for this style of climbing. I use one on Glass Slipper to keep my shoes dry - you'd never hit it!
