Controversial and visionary at the time as it was one of the first bolted routes in Scotland.

Really interesting to see this shot and to see how little chalk there is on the holds. It took me a moment to figure out exactly which part he's on! I uploaded some of the same route earlier today and by comparison, it's caked in white now.
Two questions:
1_How did you get the shot? Were you just leaning out from above, or were you rigged over to the tree to pull yourself outwards?
2_What's he actually doing, as he's not clipping the rope he's leading on?
Fraser - 28/Jul/14
I love the way Dave's chalk bag dwarfs him!

Reckon he's on twin ropes and the one he's clipping is behind his arm.
Arms Cliff - 28/Jul/14
Arms Cliff has it nailed as indeed did Dave on the day. We arrived at the crag, set up a top rope for me to jumar up. I got in position and Dave climbed it in one go with little in the way of any rests

Thanks, makes sense now. I think I'm just so used to this bit of the wall being fully bolted nowadays that I never considered the twin rope option. Great photo. Cheers.

Got some wires on his harness, how many bolts were in it then? And did it top out as well?
Andy Moles - 05/Aug/14
Andy, without checking with Dave originally there were 4 bolts and no it didn't top out
