Peak Grit in the 60's. Hawser laid rope tied round the waist; two sets of nuts on slings and a hawser laid sling. When we were very young.......

And a Crompton helmet!

Mark 1. The mark 2 was way more 'solid'! (was it not 'Compton?)

It was the "Compton Climber", I had one,it came with a plastic chin guard which was quickly removed by most climbers.
deepstar - 15/Jul/15
Chin cup on the Compton Mk2 filled rapidly with sweat on hard moves I seem to recall (Brant Direct for me....)

Of course, "Compton" it was. Never had one myself, I used one of the earliest Joe Browns, quite a neat little affair before they grew into the great dorkish thing that we all remember.

The Compton was a tough helmet, but the problem was that it tended to slip back as in this photo - in which position it was probably more or less useless!
John Stainforth - 16/Jul/15
That particular helmet did the job when I was hit by a rock whilst cleaning a route on Gardom's.
My Dad mended the hole for me with fibre glass :-)
