Its interesting to compare the normal amount of snow / ice visible on the face in1971, to the sparseness in more recent photo's.

I think you may have answered your question - why was it normal to do the rognon? It looks a bit dicey bypassing it on the left

You are absolutely right, it does look dodgy compared to more recent photo's. However, in my opinion, teams are sadly missing out on the best and hardest climbing on the whole route by avoiding the rognon. Give it a go!
