First attempt at putting photos on the site, had to drastically reduce the resolution for them to accept them. Majority of the photos were 4megapixels to start with. Any advice welcome

Before reducing the resolution, the first thing to do is to resize them. You should be able to do this with most photo editing software. If they are 4 megapixels, try resizing to about 30 or 40 percent - just see what fits on screen nicely. Then you should have a file about the right size.
