Thanks, John, Russell. I envy you, Russell heading out here for the first time - just pick a clear day! I started out on Harter Fell and headed north (showers on the Hardknott Pass!). It's a bit of a pull onto Border End but as I was hanging around near the top the clouds started to clear off the Scafells. So many great climbing days in this view - Esk Buttress, Heron Crag, Scafell to say nothing of walking up the Esk.

This is so near the camera position I had 30 years ago when doing my first book. Unquestionably one of the greatest spots in the whole Lake District. /photos/dbpage.php?id=61377

Yes, they are very close, Gordon. I'd come down the ridge from the top, descending towards the Roman fort. That way I could see the river and also get out of the wind. There has been quite a lot of tree planting on the slopes above the Esk - in a few decades it may look quite forested.
