Apparently, on the first ascent, Robin Smith had carried a towel to dry the holds as he climbed this pitch...the team were aware of this, but had forgotten to take one with them! Needless to say they had a few hairy moments!

That looks like quite a modern rope for the day. Was it kernmantel?

Well spotted. They are using Kernmantel ropes which had been around for several years. Excellent rope but expensive at that time compared with the ever popular hawser laid nylon.
