John and I both sight-led this classic on the same day in 1970. I did it with Tim James, and went down to Wendy's Cafe for a celebratory cup of tea. John and John Syrett were there, and as soon as my brother heard I'd done Cenotaph he said, 'Right, I'm doing it!' So we all went back up the Pass again.

I must emphasise that this was simply a 'record shot', taken in fantastically poor light, at dusk, with film that was probably about 50 ASA (it certainly wasn't Tri-X). The original negative was so thin as to be virtually unprintable - but thanks to Photoshop, using the only very grotty print I had, I was able to retrieve all this visual informatio.
