Rockfax - Significant Donations to Bolt Funds Gear News

© Roy Thomas

We are very pleased to announce a number of significant donations to bolt funds across the UK and some of the areas we cover in Spain, France and Italy. This followed a good year for Rockfax where we had an excellent take-up of Rockfax Digital and a return to more normal book sales following the difficulties experienced by most businesses in 2020.

"We really appreciate your support for this area and being in communication with Peak, Dorset, etc., so do they." - Roy Thomas, SWBF

Donations have been made to the UK bolt funds for North Wales, South Wales, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Dorset, Peak and Gary Gibson's own bolt fund. Ron Kenyon sent some photos of bolting activities carried out by the Cumbria bolt fun including the striking cherry picker use at Coudy Rock!

We are also pleased to have been able to make a further big donation to the El Chorro bolt fund - thanks to Chris Miller for being a great help here. Chris also informed us how useful the drill we bought a couple of years ago had been in maintaining old routes and opening up some new sectors.

Further contributions have been made to the local climbers around Nice through Atout Roc where a new crag called La Plage has been developed. These are from sales of the Côte d'Azur guidebook.

We have also made our first contribution to the local climbers in the San Vito Lo Capo area of Sicily for their ongoing work replacing the bolts there. This followed the publication of the Sicily Rockfax in March 2021.

In September 2019 I wrote an article explaining our policy towards bolting and outlining some of the difficulties we have had in contributing to international bolting in particular. In that article, we hinted that we would be reviewing our policy of capping contributions from new books after the initial 1000 sales. I can confirm that from now on we contribute from every book sold, to an area with bolted climbs, where we have an established relationship. In non-bolted areas, we will aim to help local access projects where they exist.

Hopefully, as things turn back to normal in 2022 we will be able to keep up and maybe increase these donations to continue supporting local bolting and access work. Any climbers who wish to get in touch to find out how Rockfax and UKClimbing can support bolting in their area, please contact us

Any pointers as to what "significant" or *big" mean? A ball park number value perhaps?

Overall our donations total around £7,000 in value for the latest batch however not all is in cash. Some is in bolts purchased direct by us, some is in books sent for sale, some is in Euros, some is in GBP.

Technically it's a telescopic handler; cherry pickers, a type of mobile elevated work platform, don't have a cab and are more maneuverable on a turntable. Yes, I'm very fun at parties.
