John Cunningham Climbing Ben Nevis 1976 Video

© Falko Rech
Just picked this up at Dave MacLeod 's blog and what a classic video. I'll let Dave introduce it.

"Nice video of John Cunningham soloing on the Ben in the mid 1970's. Thanks to Paul Cunningham for sharing that. I'd seen this before at the Ice Men gathering I hosted a few years ago at the Fort William Mountain festival with Yvon Chouinard (who shot the film), Jimmy Marshall and Hamish McInnes. It was nice to see it again and watching it made me think how little has changed today in highland climbing. Maybe not on the Ben which is a tad busier on weekends, but highland climbing is still a relaxed, exploratory, wild and sometimes lonely affair, 40 odd years later. Here's to that. I'm more likely to end the day with tea than a dram though, and then get training!"

After you have watched the video check out the Ben Nevis links on the right for more Scottish winter entertainment.

what a fantastic film ! Anyone know what route he was on ? The Coe road was a bit more rough and ready in the 70`s...

So good you had to post it twice? Leaving my Thursday night comment isolated... http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?n=378746

That is just a great film - Creag Dhu Climber is worth a read too. Best Scottish all-rounders; Cunningham, Cuthbertson, Macleod? Bruce

Having started climbing in the Coe in the early 70's I would say from the look of the road that this film pre dates the 70s and is more like 1967 than 1976, the Ballachulish Bridge was opened in 1975 and the film is before that, The law about motor cycle helmets was introduced in the early 70's (73?) and its also before that.
