I only tried riding stoker on a tandem once and I hated it ! great for on the flat, heads down and go fast but when you get to a little rise where you would normally stand on the pedals and carry speed or knock down the gears and spin up it, you realise that you just don't have the choice.
Are the cranks usually in phase ie. both at 12 oclock position at the same time? just wondering if having them offset by 90 degrees would make things smoother by reducing dead spots.
In phase, offset makes it wobbly and horrible to ride. Many moons ago we tried this for fun with a tandem built from a couple of old steel frames. Suprisingly, the whole thing even held for a 300km weekend trip, better than expected for some school boys' first attempts playing with an arc welder!
