I have come across something called ScotRail Cycle Rescue, but the link from Scotrail is a 404 and I cannot seem to find much info about it. Can anyone help please.
In particular does one need to book through Scotrail in the first place? I probably would but as the journey to Malaig would be Avanti then Scotrail not necessarily, in fact it could even be booked through Northern if I did it via my local ticket office.

It seems a bit of a too good to be true thing the little I have discovered.

Never heard of it and I do use my bike on ScotRail.

I think you might have found some dead links from when it did exist hence the 404

The old page for it on their website was last captured by the Internet Archive back in 2015 so I'd guess they stopped offering the service sometime around then:

Shame, it's a lovely idea, but easy to see how it could have been abused, or even just overwhelmed by legitimate use.

Thats a shame. I have rung the phone number, 3 options,

1. Current incident
2. Previous incident
3. Anything else

Recorded message, but it's an insurance service, I assume offering breakdown cover for bicycles.
