Hey,

I'm around Bristol for a few weeks over Christmas, and was wondering what nearby options there are for bouldering (other than gollums cave) when it's rained within a few days? Obviously the sandstone stuff is off limits, but the majority here is sandstone. I've been down to Sand Point before and that was decent, just wondering what options I have. I've got a car, but don't have masses of money to spend on fuel. Cheers!!

The traditional area is the underside of the Portway road bridge near Sea Mills railway station.

Walk in about 10m so you wont get too wet. Traversing both side of the pillar nearest the road.

Not much to be honest. I think you'd be best off at Sea Walls in Avon Gorge, which at least is quick drying. The micro routes on choice wall are worthwhile and some can be highballed, the Arete just to the left is a good and techy 7A, and there's a few other bits and bobs. The new quarry traverse is also just round the corner.

Most of the actual bouldering is in the woods and sandstone, so won't dry fast - but you might be ok if we get a sustained dry spell.

Anywhere near the seaside tends to dry pretty quickly if there is a sea breeze.

+ one for Seawalls. Some of the highballs and the arete are great and also a few problems below The Prince.

The downside  is that the base of Avon Gorge (Sea Walls Area) gets very muddy in winter.

There are a few little boulders which start off the bottom of the ramp. It's worth taking an extra pad to build a flat platform with.

Alternatively,  take some gear and a rope to secure your pads and stop them sliding down when you drop!
