I'm after some acoustic/classical guitar music to add to my itunes repertoire. I love the sound of a guitar played well, as opposed to when I play it, so come on UKC......what's out there that you consider to be worthy of recommendation.

Thanks in advance.

In reply to sculptor: I'm a flamenco aficionado and can recommend the albums 'Un Momento en el Sonido' by Vicente Amigo and 'Tauromagia' by Manolo Sanlucar. Guitar playing doesn't get any better than these two.

In reply to dinkypen:

John Renbourn, along with Bert Jansch, well that is my music sorted for a while.

In reply to sculptor: I vividly remember seeing Segovia in London in the mid 1970s. He was the person who massively expanded the classical guitar repertoire by transcribing the music of composers who wrote for other instruments, and any records made by him which you can find will be well worth listening to.
 TN 07 Mar 2009
In reply to John2:

I have quite a soft spot for Segovia since most of the guitar pieces I played when I was learning were written by him or by Fernando Sor.

In reply to all:

Thanks to everyone for some fantastic suggestions. I shall soon have too much guitar music and will have to post a thread requesting suggestions for thrash or 1940's ballads or some such!

Cheers

In reply to sculptor: This is probably more than you want but I got on a roll...

Julian Bream did an album of Albeniz and Granados in the 80s which was outstanding and is now on CD. He also did a whole series of 'Music of Spain vols 1-(I think 6). The 20th century volume (6?) with Rodrigo etc on it is fabulous...including Invocation and Danse and Tres Piezas Espanolas. The record which was made for the Channel 4 !Guitarra! documentary was excellent too...not sure if available.

If you like Benjamin Britten - Nocturnal (preferable played by Julian Bream)...the finest piece ever written for the modern guitar.

Segovia's recording of the Bach Chaconne is incredible...perhaps not technically up to Modern standards but nobody gets near it for atmosphere.

Together by Bream and Williams plus their Bream and Williams Live.

Pro Arte Guitar Trio - Arabesque...Album of French Music...Debussy etc. Fabulous musicianship and great sound. Simon Munting - best classical guitarist never to become world famous IMHO

Music of Leo Brouwer but I'm not sure who has recorded these best..The Black Decameron and Elogio de la Danza especially good. John Williams' recording doesn't get the rhythms quite right in the fabulous Balada (Black Decameron). I've only heard them played right once but when you hear it...it's obvious. I tried myself and got close...Lawrence Tendler got it right but I can't find a recording by him.

Ray Burley's recording of Gilbert Biberian's preludes (plus lots more) http://www.raymondburley.com/index.php?page=cds&family=cds&category...

Non-classical:
Martin Simpson - Prodigal Son...how does he get that sound???
Ry Cooder - A Meeting by the River - collaboration with an Indian musician called VM Bhatt

PS I was a half decent classical guitarist until I couldn't take the strain any longer and got a proper job.

We used to play beat the intro - Britten's Nocturnal was always got on first note - a single note...utterly distinctive composer. I love the way it starts with the (utterly unrecognisable) 'Britten version' of the Dowland song, then rebuilds it with each variation until it ends with the song 'as if' it was being played on a solo lute.

...and I forgot Barrios! - a one off genius

John Williams' original recording is excellent but in the end I prefer http://www.amazon.com/Intimate-Barrios-Agustin-Barrios-Mangore/dp/B00000DG1...

Probably echoing the above suggestions, but Davy Graham is an absolute must, along with Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. Eduardo Niebla is also fantastic, saw him a couple of weeks ago at Sheffield University for £2.50!

There's a wonderful Naxos recording of three of Bach's Violin Sonatas transcribed for guitar, played by Nicholas Goluses. (Naxos 8.553193)

In reply to sculptor: Personal favourites are probably Andy McKee, Rodrigo Y Gabriella, John Williams. There are loads more, but can't be arsed trying to think of them all at the moment
In reply to sculptor:

We could do a lot worse than listen to the wonderful Bach Cello Prelude BWV1007 played on the guitar. Perfect music for 1am ...

There's a lovely version of Debussy's Clair de Lune by Bream & Williams

But my 3 Spanish/flamenco faves are the following - in particular, the Manolo Sanlucar piece 'Oracion' is stunningly beautiful...

Manolo Franco

And, in a totally different genre, Eric Mongrain's 'Air Tap' can't be beaten for exuberant fun..
