One of life's little pleasures is stumbling across great new (to me) music.

A few days ago I discovered this great song by folk duo Janice Burns and Jon Doran, whom I'd never heard of before.

https://open.spotify.com/track/4SdzSSefJu0pwbo41wzfgB?si=pBbsVk6uQRSmtiR3IZ...

Which also led me to another great song of theirs

I've been listening to these songs several times a day, and just wanted to share them, so hopefully someone here can also enjoy a new discovery.

Any recommendations in a similar theme welcome.

I’d recommend this album by Yoko Pwno - described as “if Daft Punk did ceilidh.

Thanks, just listened to the first song on that album, and liked it. They sound like a band I'd enjoy, looking forward to giving the rest of it a listen.

They are an excellent live band.  If you get a chance to see them, go.

Not necessarily 'similar' but, in the Celtic folk genre, and just in case you haven't heard of him, let me mention Daoiri Farrell. I only heard him play last year - and it was a revelation.

Thanks, I think I had come across him going down some Spotify rabbit holes before, but not for a while, so good to be reminded.

I can well imagine, I'll keep an eye out for them playing my way (and coinciding with an evening pass!)

I do have 4-5 Low albums... sadly he's not coming to Ireland else I would be there!

A similar theme, in that it’s new to me, about a year and a bit ago I discovered Snarky Puppy. I’ve been addicted ever since. Jazz-funk-fusion heaven.

Ah. I absolutely love Low, one of those bands who steadily got better as they developed their sound. The kind of music I love,.. where they do it coz they love it. I saw them in Edinburgh just before Mimi died, the gig was an astonishing wonderful 90 minutes of beauty and magic. I haven't listened to Alan's album, I want to experience his new music fresh and with as little expectation as possible.

It'll be a right laugh if it's shite 😂

(not addressing your request for similar theme, just going on "new music discoveries")

She's been going for a while but until recently I was only really aware of one song, 170, which BBC Radio 6Music playlisted in 2023. Now touring a new album which I have listened to and love - lots of pithy observation and dry or sometimes caustic wit, in keeping with 170. Almost like a more spoken-word Courtney Barnett at times.

Anna Erhard

I've been a bit absent from "new music" for a while, as I've been in a realm of classical and of doing homework on old classic pop etc.)

In reply to Blue Straggler and others:

Thanks for all the responses.

Despite my opening post, I'm normally pretty guilty of just listening to the same stuff a lot of the time, so will be looking forward to giving all the above a listen.

Someone I only discovered last year you might like is Bess Attwell - effortlessly melodic, gently observant and reflective lyrics:

Only heard a couple of songs so far but I’ve been impressed.
She’s touring here atm. In fact, am I right in remembering you’re over Nottinghamshire way? She’s on in Nottingham in a couple of nights.

The Glastonbury coverage is always good for something new.

In reply to Bob Kemp: Thanks Bob. I am going to see that show, the venue is an old favourite that I haven’t been to for around 15 months. Her support, Nyssa, is also very much to my tastes so I am really looking forward to it .

all songs are good but I think 170, Spa and B.M.G. are good introductions

Thanks for the suggestions! Hope you enjoy the gig. I’ll check out Nyssa as well.
