After watching that Kurt Cobain documentary last night...

Smells like Teen Spirit/More Than a Feeling(Boston)..same riff

What other songs make you think you've heard them before?

Another Girl Another Planet/The Cowboy Song(Thin Lizzy)

Last Nite(The Strokes)/American Girl(Tom Petty)

In reply to wcdave:

I think the Dr Who theme sounds like the theme from Captain Pugwash.

It does when I sing it anyway.
In reply to wcdave:

Every single Nobbie Williams release.

PS A riff in the new Bloc Party album that rings bells but I can't put my finger on it yet.

In reply to I am the God of Strathyre: Greg Lake's 'I believe in Father Christmas' ripped off a tune from Sergei Prokofiev, but then ELP based a lot of there stuff on the classics

The only one I can think of off-hand is 5ive 'Everybody get up' which seems to rip off 'pour some sugar on me' by Def Leppard
rich 19 Feb 2007
In reply to brothersoulshine: lol

i'm thinking you mean the:

dudeledu - dudeledu . . .

bits rather than the

whoooh-oooooh . . .

bits

In reply to wcdave:

Cigarettes and Alcohol(Oasis)/Get it On(T Rex)...same tune.

Roadrunner(Johnathon Richman)/What Goes On (V.Underground)..same tune

Yes!! Oh, the joys of being understood
In reply to wcdave:

Every song featuring a G D C Em chord sequence must be included too, although strangely enough they tend to sound fresh each time.

Weller's a right rip off merchant. Two more:
The Changingman = 10538 Overture (ELO)
Town Called Malice = Gettin' Ready for Love (Martha Reeves)
In reply to I am the God of Strathyre:

Is that the one that sounds a bit like Muse?
johnj 19 Feb 2007
In reply to wcdave: when you've only got 7 major notes in the scale it's pretty hard to do anything other is it not??

In reply to prana:

When the Jam were recodring "a town called malace" Phil collins was recording in the same studio (different room) there was some kind of argument and phil was pissed off! he listened to what the Jam were recording and decided to do the same song and release it at the same time. Howerver, he thought that the Jam were recording a version of "you can't hurry love" by the supremes. This is why phil did a version of this song.

I was told this by an engineer that has worked Paul Weller so im pretty sure it's true.

prodigy outa space total rip off of that other song, you know the one cant think of the name
prana 19 Feb 2007
In reply to doz generale: LOL- funny story
i can understand phil's confusion- the two originals do have pretty much the same bassline, and i notice they were both released in '66. I wonder who was copying who then?
prana 19 Feb 2007
In reply to prana:
> I wonder who was copying who then?
A. both tunes were written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, who copied Dorothy Love Coates & the Original Gospel Harmonettes' 1950s hit "You Can't Hurry God (He's Right on Time)" <wiki>

Most things that Spacemen 3 did were rip-offs of The Stooges or The 13th Floor Elevators, they did a pretty bloody good job of it though.
 doz generale 19 Feb 2007
In reply to prana:

the Jam seem to have a thing about stealing basslines! a town called malace has bass line for you cant hurry love and there there was the beatles taxman bassline. i forget the name of the jam track its on though

Band Aid's Feed the World, and the Dr Who theme music.
prana 19 Feb 2007
In reply to Fredt: i like orbital's version of the dr whot didn't now about
The Pogues (intentionally, according to an interview) used a bass line in their song "Wild Cats of Kilkenny" (from Rum, Sodomy & the Lash) that is similar to the Doctor Who theme, as did Pink Floyd in their song "One of These Days" (from Meddle in 1971), which featured a brief pedal steel guitar solo that echoed the theme's melody </>

will have to look them up..
Alex Purser 19 Feb 2007
In reply to wcdave:

Anyone know the song where the bassline is the vocal melody for the "itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny yellow polka-dot bikini" song's chorus?

Don't look back in anger and The Scientist by Coldplay both appear to slightly rip off Imagine.

In reply to wcdave:

"Come as you are" by Nirvana is clearly just Killing Joke "Eighties"

In reply to wcdave: on first hearing the dandy warhols 'bohemian like you' i was amazed that they'd managed to rip off two rolling stones tracks(brown sugar and sympathy for the devil) and not get sued.

i'm going to have listen to 'the cowboy song' now, 'another girl..' is one of my favourites (and one of the best drug songs going)
In reply to wcdave:
> (In reply to rick1fugazi) Didn't KJ sue them(or try to) over that?

Yes, but then they kissed and made up and it was all ok in the end.

Decent Days And Nights by The Futureheads (which I love) = My Sharona by The Knack (which I hate)
I only noticed after really enjoying the Futureheads song for ages and now it really bugs me every time I hear it. Grrr.

Every Double Life by The New Amsterdams = Spangle by Jimmy Eat World.

The opening feedback on the current Killers single sounds just like the beginning of something from the 80s that I can't remember. Doppelgrrr.
In reply to wcdave:

Oh yes

Save Tonight by Eagle Eye Cherry (ahem) = The Passenger by Iggy Pop.
In reply to wcdave: That stupid Lil' Chris song getting enough rips off ever fallen in love by Buzzcocks
And jet- are you gonna be my girl is exactly the same tune as Iggy Pop- Lust for life.

In reply to wcdave:

Blur's 'Parklife' was ripped off from 'Ride the Darker Wave' by Sebadoh.

Oh, and Oasis 'What's the Story...' has the same riff as REM's 'The One I Love'.

What version YOU listening to? May as well say X Town Traffic by Jimmy H.
 Mike Peacock 20 Feb 2007
In reply to wcdave:

Belle and Sebastian's "I'm a Cuckoo" takes from "The Boys Are Back in Town".

Flaming Lips "Fight Test" from Cat Steven's "Father & Son", but then they did get sued for that one I believe.
 Blue Straggler 21 Feb 2007
In reply to wcdave:

The chorus of "I Wanna Be The Only One" by Eternal (with Bebe Winans) is a melodic facimile of "Mmmmm...Bop!" by Hanson.

Nobody has yet agreed with me on this point, but I am correct and they just like to pretend they're above Eternal and Hanson.

Shine-Take That/a bit of Mr Blue Sky-ELO,a bit of It's Magic-Pilot(who can remember that?)and the general feel of Sgt Pepper era Beetles.
