Not a spoof.

Looks like one of those “what colour is your tea / toast” quizzes

In reply to Blue Straggler:

Gina Carano, James Franco, Armie Hammer , James Woods and Gary Busey are vying for fourth place

In reply to Blue Straggler:

Trump seems to have forgotten that the reason Hollywood is no longer doing nearly as well as it once did is that it’s about twice as expensive to make a movie there than anywhere else on this planet. Which is why American producers favour the British studios as much as they do.

In reply to Gordon Stainforth:

aren’t they still Hollywood products though, if funded by Hollywood studios? Regardless of shooting location?

In reply to Blue Straggler:

Yes, it’s certainly American money at source, but it keeps many British technicians in work. Amazingly, there are two or even three new studios being built on the outskirts of London. Of course we do a lot of other, non-American movies, often financed by several countries in addition to the UK.

In reply to Gordon Stainforth:

You do seem, extraordinarily, to have missed the entire point of my reply/enquiry! Excellent work!

In reply to Blue Straggler:

I thought the point of the post was about the ease, or otherwise, of making films in Hollywood,

In reply to Gordon Stainforth:

Think again.

It’s not about physical production in Hollywood. It’s about income for the classically-considered-Hollywood-based studios. And this has always been the way. Lawrence of Arabia is a Hollywood film and you know this.

I have no idea what this means, can you enlighten me? Although I would choose Busey for lots of things, so waaaaaah

In reply to aln:

No.

Oh c'mon, don't be like that.

In reply to aln:

your recent post on another thread indicates that you need to be kept at arm’s length for quite some time

There’s an increasing amount of US funded movies being shot in central and Eastern Europe too with governments offering huge tax incentives.

Same goes for VFX work too, though the U.K. govt has announced some tax incentives on this front of late…

In reply to Iamgregp:

Yes indeed.

In reply to Gordon Stainforth:

Tom Cruise is a considerable asset on this front..I mean how many Mission Impossible films have been shot here ( including the infamous railway scene at Stoney).

That and then American actors wanting to do a turn in the London theatre district( my last one seeing  Succession's J Smith- Cameron alongside Mark Rylance in December)

Labour Gov are going full bore in developing this, as did the Tories.

But I do wonder how many are permanent jobs..but that is the nature of the creative sector.

Trump’s Special Ambassadors to Hollywood are all old, sexisat reactionary men...no surprises there.

In reply to Bulls Crack:

It looks as if the appointments are all about an attempt to create a shift towards more right-wing movies. I’m not sure they’ll have much success because the vast majority of movie-makers and goers are broadly liberal-minded and anti-Fascist.

Yes to first three sentences. But, there won't be many permanent jobs because for a long-time the film industry in Britain (and Ireland) has been largely freelance, and the studios ‘four-wall’. But, as you say, that’s the nature of the beast and an aspect of it that I’ve actually always found very exciting (even when I was working in the industry and it meant a considerable amount of insecurity and periods of being out of work.) Each movie being a one-off team of freelancers.

A remake of the Great Dictator in the offing perhaps?

 McHeath 17 Jan 2025
In reply to Blue Straggler:

Wow, he does have a knack for picking the right guys for the job, doesn’t he? Stallone has faced multiple accusations of sexual assault, for one of which he paid a $2 million settlement, and pleaded guilty to drug smuggling. Gibson was actually blacklisted for 10 years in Hollywood for repeated anti-semitic, homophobic and racist statements. Voight has kept his slate clean, but he’s known as being rabidly pro-Trump.

All in all a magnificent package of ambassadorial characteristics which should go down really well with the international film industry.

You mean with Chaplin’s amazing anti-fascist ending obliterated and all irony removed?

In reply to McHeath:

It's worth reading about Voight's politics on his wikipedia page.... that's one hell of a shift. I'm not sure he's kept a clean slate either... just a lot less dirty than his fellow 'ambassadors'.

Things are changing (paywalled link... but there is advice on other threads on how to bypass that issue)

This was my take on it. I don’t know anything about Stallone but Gibson and Voight are both well known as incoherent racists.

Harvey Weinstein ought to have been in the list too, but he's busy right now

The majority of “Hollywood” output consists of

•Male lead being very masculine.

•male lead exerting dominance over supporting character's by getting in face and shouting.

•Sh@t loads of guns.

•All world problems solved by one exceptional individual “male” taking it upon themselves by breaking the rules/laws, disregard for the safety of bystanders and absolute faith in “male” leads exceptional decision making.

•Bad guys are always easy to spot

•Consensus isn't a thing.

•sh@t load of guns solving problems.

•conspiracy everywhere

•shady government is a fact.

you can see that a lot of Hollywood blockbuster output has been more in tune with the present day zeitgeist than us liberals.

A lot more guns and shouting comes out of hollywood than Sophies Choice 😏

Superhero movies are incredibly right wing. Vigilantes taking justice into their own hands because the Deep State is ineffective? Autocratic male rulers who possess absolute executive power unless beaten in martial combat? It's an Alt-Right wet dream.
