I'm trying to organise some friends to come and check out Freyr near to Dinant & Namur, Belgium. Can anyone suggest a good local campsite? Is it fairly easy to pick up a guide book in the area?

Gratful for any info.
Oz.
In reply to ozbaker: It's really nice. Topos used to be available on the Belgian Alpine Club's (CAB) website, but i've had a quick look now and couldn't find them. There was a CAB-run campsite at the crag when I was there, and officially you had to be a member of a club like the BMC to climb (we ignored that); but that was 5+ years ago, so things may have changed. If you want an unusual climb to contrast with the conventional (and polished) sport pitches then do some of the easier mountianeering-style ridge routes, good fun.

In reply to ozbaker: Put Freyr into search forums and you will find lots of useful threads on this very subject.

In reply to ozbaker:

You can (or could) camp for free in the field across the road from the Bar Chamonix, on top of the crag. Last summer we stopped here:

only a mile or so from the cliff. A bit busy but nice enough.

The campsite at the top of the crag as mentioned before, but you may need to either be a BMC member or blag your way with any suitably pre-printed piece of card declaring membership of the 'East Anglia and the Wash Mountaineering Club', with a BMC looky-likey logo. There is also a CAB hut. The restaurant/bar at the top used to be very good (not been for a while) - epic steak, frites. They used to sell the topo too.

The bars in Dinant are good too. I think. hic.

The campsite at the top of the crag is actually a bivy site, so you should expect to have to take your tent down during the day. There's maybe a small charge to be paid at the CAB hut for it, which is near the car park.

The Cafe Chamonix is the standard climbers haunt there. It's also just at the top of the crag and has recently changed hands, so it looks a lot fancier than it did a couple of years ago. The food's still good and the service is still slow. I'm pretty sure that they should also still be selling topos there too. At least they always used too.

As for climbs, some people tend to find that Freyr is very run-out and it is definitely polished. There are still some great climbs to be had there - Captain Coeur de Miel being my recent favourite.
