We're looking at flying in to Barcelona at the end of October to do a sport trip - Can anybody recommend any areas within a couple of hours drive that are worth checking out? Currently looking at Montserrat but open to suggestion - Not after anything particularly hard, 6a - 6c+ would cover it.

Cheers ducks

Vast amounts of choice

Type Barcelona in the search here

Montserrat, St Llorenc, Siurana, Margalef (> 2 hours), etc contain several lifetimes worth of great routes

You really are spoilt for choice.  Catalunya has possibly the best and most diverse set of sports climbing crags in Europe.  A good place to start would be with one of the two POD area guides to two of the main regions: Tarragona and Lleida. There's tons in both  and if I were to massively oversimplify I'd say the former was better for single pitch cragging and the latter for longer adventures. Both would occupy you for months, let alone a week or two

We've visited over 50 crags in the area over the last few years (mostly in "shoulder season" October or February)  and there's beta and photos for each of them in the Catalunya section of our blog

Hopefully useful to have the perspective of a travelling Brit. Have a browse and take your pick. Personally, if you haven't been before, I'd be tempted to base myself near Siurana (and Montserrat would be a long way down my list).

Have a great time!

I’ve climbed in the Tarragona area a fair amount, Plenty to go at in the grade range you’re looking at. Staying in Cornudella de Montsant is a good easy option to allow you to try the different areas. Its a great little town in the middle of the area ranging from 15-60mins driving to the different climbing areas and is ~2hours from Barcelona. It also benefits from a couple of good bars and restaurants, plus climbing shop (also bar/restaurant).

Since going to this area for my very first climbing trip I’ve been back almost every year (mostly to Siurana) it’s world class.

Enjoy
