How midgey are the Mournes?

Thinking of biving out in the Mournes next week, but having been ravished by midges while biving before, I'd be keen to avoid the experience again.

Never been to the Mournes before, are they bad for the wee beasties? Are they particularly bad at the moment?

Hi Mike

I've never really experienced any midges in the Mournes. Done loads of climbing and walking there in the past and had never really thought about it until I read your question.

Thanks, good to know. I'll have next and smidge spray just in case.

Didn't see any sign of them yesterday (mind you there was a bit of wind blowing).

Would bring a net/midge spray just in case. But I've rarely found them to be any sort of problem.

Thanks, just thought it worth checking with cloudy, humid conditions and light winds expected.

Living in Scotland you learn never be too careful!

I live in the mournes and have only really had one very bad experience with them. Generally had no bother from them other than that one time.

95% of the time it's fine. But if you hit a mix of very still warm humid evening it can be a nightmare.

Not enough chance of it being bad to ever not go.
