Anyone know of any climbing/ bouldering around Stuttgart I’m heading there with work for 5 weeks.

Thanks matt

There's quite a bit within reasonable distance:

I've only climbed in the Donautal, which gives great limestone routes up to 120m. They're a mixture of sport and trad; about 1 1/2 hours drive from Stuttgart. The Schwäbische Alb is closer and also has many good possibilities; also limestone and shorter routes.

I think there's a UKC poster who is based there; can't remember his name though.

Edit: maybe MischaHY can help you, he's apparently based in Tübingen which isn't far from Stuttgart.

PPS the DAV Kletterhalle in Stuttgart is huge and very good; the German national team trains there regularly.

If you ever want something else to do while you are there, the Natural History Museum is fantastic, if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Hans knows the score.

Donautal is great fun if you like techy lime sport, the Alb is a bit chossy but has some gems, Pfalz is brilliant and probably the most fun for a trad climber. Bear in mind the ethic is more like slate which means the harder stuff often has bolts and long runouts.

Best bouldering gym is Active Garden in Waiblingen by a long, long way (10 mins on train from the town centre) - the setting and hold selection is world class. Best lead gym is definitely the Stuttgart DAV Kletterhalle - great setting and loads to go at.

Some tips - cams are absolute rubbish and almost always rip in Swabian lime because it's very soft - but even tiny rubbish looking wires and skyhooks hold really well so bear this in mind on the easier routes that often need to be tamed with a bit of kit if you've got a lower level (especially in the low 6th grade).

Have fun!
