Snugpack is a name I see a lot with regards to military kit.
However, I rarely hear people talking about it for purely civvie reasions.

Just wondering because I may buy kit such as a thermal jacket for use in normal expeditions and military ex's.

Is there a reason Snugpack is not mentioned here as much as popular outdoor brands?

How does value for money compare to rab, ME, MH etc etc?

In reply to Daniel Heath: I have a couple of "civvy" Snugpak sleeping bags and find them great. Somone gave a positive for the sleeka on this site recently. One reason they may not be as popular is that I am not sure they are stocked as broadly as other brands. Personaly I buy them out of choice, they are well made(in britain mainly),well priced and perform well.

Probably because it doesn't look sexy and 'technical' and is often advertised in drab colours.

I haven't looked at Snugpack stuff for years but as far as I remember it looked good value. If squaddies like it then it probably works.

Ok so for example:

Keela Belay Jacket. As low as £42 on the internet!!
How would this compare to RAB generator?

Thanks for your helpful replies

In reply to Daniel Heath: Sorry I cann't run to that comparison but here is a recent thread from UKC that gives the Keela Belay Jacket a good write up:-http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=433961

In reply to Daniel Heath: It's really good kit, robust and simple.

I have a Snugpak jacket which I use as an emergency kit when hillwalking and groups out.

An old Softie 6 sleeping bag that I have is still usable after 10 years so you can certainly get use out of it.

In reply to Daniel Heath:

Snugpack is good stuff at very reasonable prices.

From your profile I guess that this won't be convenient for you but those living locally may be interested to know that Snugpack are having a sale on 3 & 4 December - see link - http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=109643765770575

[ Moderators please note that this isn't a sneaky commercial ad, rather intended just for info - I've nothing to do with Snugpack other than as an occasional customer ]

In reply to Daniel Heath: i have a four years old snugpak synthetic sleeping bag rated to -7 C// still performing.

Snugpak are only just across the valley from where I work. I've got a couple of their sleeping bags which are 6 years old, really toasty and seem to be standing up to the test of time

In reply to Daniel Heath: got a couple of sleeping bags from them that i really rate.
In reply to Tobias at Home:

Those sleeping bags were also repaired for free by the manufacturer after they lost a fight with a washing machine IIRC.

In reply to Mario Sciacca: I was quite impressed with my old snugpack synthetic sack - I bought it as a stopgap replacement after I left my sack at home by accident, but it's really good as a summer alternative I don't need to worry about getting nicked

In reply to Daniel Heath:

strange all the praise here, i've heard nothing but contempt for snugpack and folk i know who've owned the stuff hated it. i think the main criticism was the 'lies, damn lies and snugpack's temperature ratings' f.eks. this bag http://www.polimil.co.uk/acatalog/Snugpak_Antarctica__117_50.html which is "low -50" ahem, perhaps not. then again the EU standardisation probably threw the damn lies out the window, dunno. I've personally found the stuff to be little more than pricier faux-army surplus.
arctic_hobo 03 Dec 2010
In reply to Daniel Heath: then again a lot of the mainstream manuf. make crap kit that falls apart etc so i'm not saying they're any worse than that
In reply to Daniel Heath: I bought this http://www.snugpak.com/index.php?MenuID=160-119&ItemID=147 for some winter and alpine work. I'll admit it's an overkill for it's temperature. I had to sleep with it half open, its an excellent bag. Couldn't recommend it enough!
I thin it was around £90 off an eBay store

In reply to Daniel Heath: ive used snugpack jackets and found them very warm but quite heavy so changed to montane instead. I also use a bivvy bag so rather than use down sleeping bags i use the snugpack military bag and even though its a bit heavy compared to other stuff (1.6kg)I wouldnt change it for the world, ive always slept like a baby in it. one thing to be aware of is that the elite range are manufactured in asia and are not as good quailty as the other stuff made here.
