I am planning a trip, hoping to climb the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa group, and the Dom, are there any benefits, in being based in Tasch, rather than Zermatt?

In my experience it's better to stay in Tasch. It's cheaper.

Even better, stay in Randa! Much nicer, cheaper, and with the best campground in the valley.

I'd second this. Camping Randa.

There is a shuttle bus to Zermatt for a reasonable fee too.

And you can walk to the Dom and Weisshorn hut ascents from the campground! Much better than driving or taking a cable car.

Quite right, Tasch which used to be a charming Alpine village is now nothing but a vile collection of over-priced car parks. Randa is still very quiet and delightful.

In reply to Fiskavaig: I agree about Randa camping. When I compared accommodation in Zermatt and Tasch a couple of years ago I thought the stuff in Tasch was cheaper but not as cheap as it should have been considering where it was, relatively bad value.

Aye, but Monta Rosa, The Horn, zinalrothorn etc are all got from Zermatt. Staying there avoids the irritating fee everytime u travel in from lower down the valley. And don't take a car so u can avoid parking fees. You'll still get shanked though.

We camped in Tasch this 'Summer' and quite enjoyed it. I agree with others that it isn't much to look at as now it serves as a car park for Zermatt. However our campsite was very quiet even when a mountain marathon and orienteering event was staged in Zermatt. We left our car in the campsite (still have to pay for this) and took the train into Zermatt for Monte Rosa trips. We also drove our car to Randa and cheekily parked it for free when we had a go at the Dom. Randa did look very nice and would serve as a good base for your trip as you can also get the train into Zermatt, it leaves frequently.

Enjoy!

Randa all the way. Has an added past time of observing an odd stonefall now and then. That's what we saw in 2013 while staying at the camp: http://www.rz-online.ch/region/visp/steinschlag-zwischen-randa-und-taesch

Seriously though, the tent field is good, if you decide for a room it's relatively cheap as well, and the restaurant has a good menu of the day which is always good and at a reasonable price. If you want to do it on the budget, no problem as well as the facilities are really good. The Taesch camping didn't look too inviting for me and there is a road/path passing right by the field, it's too close to the river for my taste and the only upside seems to be with being close to the train station...

Cheers

Pah, missed the green but at least it didn't go in the bunker.

Thanks everyone, for your advice, i will be looking for chalet or apartment, self catering, rather than camping. Do the shuttle buses, and trains run 24 hours? between Zermatt and Randa?

If you want to stay in Zermatt then the Bahnhoff Hotel is very good. It has a dormitory style bunks as well as rooms and self catering facilities plus a kit room where you can leave gear secure while you're out on the mountains etc. The guy who runs the place is a Guide and really helpful for booking huts and local knowledge of routes and conditions. I've stayed there a few times and many Guides use the place too.

It's just a half of it. The other half broke off when it bounced off the road to Taesch.... The trees were breaking like matchsticks

In the camping you have nice and large rooms with shared bathrooms, most of them even have a terrace:

You get discounts on longer stays. There are also some rooms available in houses in Taesch, but we always stayed on the camping, either with tent or in the room. You need to have your own cooking stuff as there's no kitchen for the guests.

From the camping they have some service, I think twice a day, to Zermatt via a shared taxi - I don't know the details. We always used a train from Taesch (20 min of fast walking from the camping), as we had 50% discount for all the tickets. The train runs every 20 min between 6:00 and 22:00. There's a night service every hour, but only on the nights Thu/Fri, Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun. Details here: http://www.matterhorngotthardbahn.ch/config/BrochuresList/Zermatt-Shuttle_2...

I was just thinking that it saves the digging to add a new greenside bunker to the course.
