Yes. They seem to be getting popular as well. Very useful if you climb a lot, the gloves prevent chaffing and save precious skin whilst belaying.

Yes, just started to for the same reasons as Mick above. Have been getting a build up of hard skin & it does seem to be helping in reducing that.

When it's a bit nippy, leather gardening gloves, quite cheap, grip rope fine and fleece lined. About £5.

No - unless alpine/ice climbing

Yes - mainly when belaying sport routes, and otherwise only if its cold. I use a pair of sailing gloves where the index and thumb are fingerless so you can still do fiddly stuff (and obviously they still work in the wet) see here - http://www.sailingclothingstore.co.uk/brands/Musto/Gloves_and_Mitts/pr22298... I dont like gri-gris and if my partner is working a route having a pair of gloves on to hold the rope is loads more comfortable and definitely saves skin.

nope, and i wouldn't like my belayer to use one either

to me there isn't the 'feel' when gloves are involved, would you drive a car around a track at brakeneck speed if it's brakes were spongy and they weren't very responsive?
 lyons 16 Sep 2008
In reply to james oswald:
bought them (well made pair from Metolius), just havent had chance to use them yet due to hideous wetness of weather.
I got megga rope burn once and dont want that to happen again. I use a Reverso and love it, yes its slick but want still want to use it as it provides effortless and quick response belaying. Hopefully the gloves will prove the stop gap needed. If there is a problem with 'feeling' the rope, I will chop off the finger tips. I am also hoping that they will keep my poor fingers warmer on m.routes and in between redpoints when on belay duty.
In reply to lyons:
I use a pair if its cold or if I need to save skin. If you're paying full price for a pair of 'belay' gloves with a PETZL or Metolius on them you must be soft in the head. Garden centres have many to choose from. I have personalized mine with S-T-A-L on one set of knuckles and L-I-O-N on the other so when I put my fists together it reads :- LIONSTAL. No wait....

In reply to Robertostallioni:
.....yes wait.....no oh my head is going softer......

In reply to the inspiral carpet:
Ok so you dont feel the texture of the rope so much, but there is no change (in my opinion) in percepption of how hard you are holding onto the rope. Only if the gloves were really ill-fitting would your hands be spongy and unresponsive

In reply to james oswald: only in cold weather but i only use hobo fingureless gloves.
In reply to james oswald:

I have a pair of 'heavy leather workers gloves' from Homebase. Cotton-lined, 100% cowhide gloves, soft and close-fitting not to impede 'feel' too much. £10.
