Help me! and I know this should be strictly on gear thread but does anyone know of a harness that goes up to 46 inch waist?

Not for me BTW.

I ordered a harness for a mate (he's big lad)for xmas and its arrived and was size large but its never gonna fit him and the others I've found are all the same! I found a Troll ABS Granite but it looks like crap so don't reccommend it. Preferably black or dark colored.

Anyone got any ideas? Sensible ones?

Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks Dan. Have emailed Lyon Equip to see if they have one (said so on Petzl site). Fingers crossed.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

OP John 03 Dec 2001
In reply to Jo:

Try Rigblast in Dyce, or Asco in Altens, or one of the offshore rope access, or equipment supply companies. I know loads of oil workers with 46 inch waists! Someone out there should supply them.

I think you should be looking for the SMALLEST harness you can find:

Between posting on "Gear" and posting here (1 minute later)your guy has lost an inch of his waist - with 22days 'til Christmas he'll be a mere 23" , falling out of everything and on the front page of Slimmers World!

In reply to Al Evans: Al?
Shouldn't that be ARSE in Athens???
*GRINS*

Jo. I have a 44" CHEST. I don't even want to THINK about anyone who has a 46" WAIST. Should they be allowed to leave the gound? Think of the potential energy involved, when they're just 50 feet off the floor. You could cause MAJOR route damage, in the ensuing earthquake, if they did deck out.
Plus, the logistics of getting the elephant to the crag, to act as his belay will be HUGE!

In reply to Graham: My waist size was 32/34 till 5 years ago when my wife became wheelchair bound. it then gradually expanded to a 44 at which I said enough and have started on the long road back. I have lost a stoneand a half in the last six months but I don't think I will ever get back to 10.5 stone as I was at my peak.
staying in a house looking after someone 24 hours a day and forgetting to look after yourself is too easy to do.
 Al Evans 03 Dec 2001
In reply to Tim, the Grey one.....: No its ok Tim, you just carry the Elephant in one of those harnesses attatched to a mobile crane.

In reply to Baz:

I have seen the DMM Alpine harnesses with extra long waist and leg loop straps. Again give them a call and see what they can do?

Also, though I don't know offhand exactly how large it'll go, I the Petzl adult full body harness suits a lot of larger sized people far better than a sit harness does. I have used this in lots of situations where I have not been happy that a sit harness alone would be safe and where a separate chest harness was inappropriate.

Bloody hell!

Ehm right...HARNESS IS NOT FOR ME!

I have 24 1/2 inch waist.

My freind has the big waist. He's 6ft 2 and 15 stone (all gut, rest is fine)and has recently (well in the past 18 months) taken up hill walking and now this year will be his first serious winter walking season, hence the harness for 'scary bits' blah blah blah. he can't climb cos he has a dodgy lknee, well certainly not over a Mod/Diff anyway. He has lost weight since he started walking but only gets out maybe once a fortnight on big walks, and toodles round the village every other night (lifestyle, commitments can't do anything about it). Yes, he is a big bloke but he's dedicated to becoming fitter and healthier so no more jokes about elephants please!

Thanks for all the serious suggestions! I will look into them and hopefully will get him sorted with a decent harness for xmas.

In reply to Jo:

The DMM Alpine would seem a sensible choice for that kind of stuff if it fits. According to their website (www.dmmwales.com), it fits 17inch waist to 46 inch waist. Mind you, when you look at the technical data, the 'normal' fits 20 inch to 38 inch (dunno what happened to the 17 inch?), and you need the larger size to go up to 46 inch waist.

Dunno if that's going to have enough spare to fit on over winter clothes, though?
Dean 03 Dec 2001
In reply to Jo:
I bought a Camp Sherpa light in size large last year. I'm 16st+, waist 38" and it was far too big for me. With the medium it's just about small enough, so the large would definitely fit your friend I think. Don't know where you can buy them, I bought mine in Decathlon in France.
Hope it helps,
Dean.

In reply to Jo:

christ dont believe it i actually have some form of climbing advice....cough cough splutter.

seriously if you cant find a suitable harness, you can use slings to make a fairly comfortable harness. now wouldnt want to take a whipper in one but for the likes of a couple of hours of top roping etc etc they are fine and ive used em once or twice. a book like manula of modern rope tech' has like a billion ways to make one (ok exagerrated but its got a few)

now must go cleanse myself from the foul disgust of writing something about a climbing. i feel all violated and stuff
Will on a new PC 04 Dec 2001
In reply to Jo:

Jo, I know you said you didn't like the look of the Troll granite, but for your mate it's got a couple of real advantages

1. simple to use
2. No padding, which is a plus if he's only going to use it occasionally as it will fit much better in the bottom of a rucsac
OP JonC 04 Dec 2001
I see - we're all politically correct when it comes to gays, the mentally ill, the french (they can't help it - he he) - but when it comes to someone being overweight then it's OK to take the piss. Nice.

I think most people overweight know they are and for most of them it is in their own hands.
However people who have to take steroids can gain weight at an alarming rate, one person who was in hospital at the same time as my wife gained 3 stone in 2 months, he was on hospital food all that time so he was being monitored.

There seems to be other sorts of discrimination, see new thread.

Jings! This all got a bit serious didn't it?

Thanks for the suggestion about slings....but its mainly for wnter walking and from past experience (when i was poor and unloved) trying to keep an array of slings from falling round your ankle while gullying is a bit difficult. I do use that on my kids though when we let em loose on our homemade wall.

Yup, I think it might have to be the Troll one guys. Yuk it may be but its the only one a)that fits and b)that doesn't cost the earth. Well well, as I tell him (and keep trying to convince myself) appearance doen't matter...so i'be bought hij a Berghaus fleece too

Shit, I've gone and mentioned it AGAIN!

On a serious point R U really interested in climbing? Dont you find it difficult?
 sutty 09 Dec 2001
In reply to Peter K: What has the difficulty got to do with it? I sometimes have difficulty walking never mind climbing and other days I can do easy vs routes.
All depends on the weather and if I am injured.

Don't you find climbing difficult? Ask John Dunne or Adam Lincoln if he does, I think it is a matter of degree.
