Bought a pair of these when they first came out and thought they were superb, so went back to the shop and bought another pair. Both are now well worn, so I'm after a bit of advice on whats a good alternative shoe. I've tried the mad rock ones on and they dont feel as precise. Any suggestions please? V mile maybe?

Have some myself, great shoe. Why an alternative? Outside had some in yesterday...
the Camp 4 is the nearest i've seen to the Ascent.

In reply to blanchie14c: I was convinced they'd stopped making them.

Just checked the camp 4 out, its more of an approach shoe.

In reply to Ian Black: Yes thay are certainly 'chunkier'. Outside may have some old stock, i heard they'd stopped making them too. The guide tennie is the most popular 'shoe you can climb in' but i hear they wear very fast.

In reply to blanchie14c: Cheers, I'll give them a bell as I can't see any on their website.

I thought about that but the foam on the heel is perishing and I dont think the rubber would stick to it.

In reply to Ian Black: The guide tennie is nothing like the ascent. It's a trainer you can climb in (a bit) rather than a comfy rockshoe. A five ten daescent might be a bit more like but it's till a trainer really. The closest matches right now would probably be a V Mile (but less padded and stiffer than an ascent) or a Sportiva Rockjock (if you can find one). If you're not too bothered about the treaded sole and heel cushioning then there are lots more alternatives though (Scarpa Thunder, Boreal Joker etc etc).

they only resole the front half.

I know thats why I'm looking for a new pair as the foam is well shot. Tried rubbing down the old foam, but still couldn't get the rubber to stick to it.

In reply to neil the weak: Cheers, I'll have a look at the Vmile.

In reply to Ian Black: I used to love 5 10 ascents.
I've now gone back to anazasi's but gone a size up from normal and getting on well with them.

In reply to Ian Black: Don't do it - I had 2?3? several of the ascents, great shoe, V Mile is very different, stiff and generally crap... having said that if you want a size 40 (?) worn a couple of times and in good condition drop me a line its not like I am ever going to wear them again.

In reply to Adders: Aye, I had a pair of the pinks, very sticky and precise but they used to cripple me.

In reply to Lurking Dave: I'm going to have a look around. The madrock version felt a lot less precise with a thicker stiffer sole. I'm a size 10 anyway mate.

In reply to Ian Black: i wear velcro's and just refuse to cripple my feet anymore. It's not like im doing hard grades anyway.
Really loving them, more so than my old faithful ascents ( must have had at least 5 pairs+ ) You can't beat 5 10 rubber.

Heard mixed reports on madrocks re how long they last. vmiles look a bit clunky. but i haven't tried either so can't really help you sorry.

In reply to Ian Black: i was an devoted ascent user, have now had 2 pairs of mad rock frenzy velcros, they are a little less sensitive, but soften and stretch quickly,
if you can remember what new ascents were like then think similar..

size wise i found they stretch a bit more so go a bit tighter if choosing between sizes, both pairs i have had have worn out, but the second pair has split on the leather, kind geuss its the leather quality, i know red chilli went through a period of the same with leather, wont stop me getting another pair though as for fit and comfy use they are similar to old ascents

In reply to All: I ended up getting a pair of Nepa Spider X. Not climbed in them yet but feel similar to my Ascents when they were new. Thanks all.

Ian.
