Ok so I want to permanently connect the hood to my Montane Extreme smock rather than having that crappy velcro fixing.

Should I:

a) Bang a load of stiches through it with a sewing machine (what kind of thread?).

b) Use some sort of glue to fuse the velcro together (what kind of glue?).

c) Your better suggestion.

I'm pretty sure seam seal would perminantly bond the hood to the jacket.

as it would be in contact with your skin I'd tend to think you'd be better using the stuff made by the same company meant for wet suit repairs.

Equally I can's see an issue sewing it together, soft shell can be sewed, any polyester thread would be OK IMO.

stick it with the velcro in the place you want it and sew the lower edge of the hood where it touches the collar.
- can be done by hand
- is fast
- can be undone easily when you change your mind

that's actually what I'd do well done hand stitching is less likely to come apart imo

In reply to uncontrollable: I sewing by hand going to be strong enough?

In reply to Removed User:
depends on if you can sew I guess. I think it's often stronger actually

Not really permanent but i've been planning to stick some popper type things through mine to hold it in place better, not sure how well it'll work yet but to my mind it seems like a good compramise. I'll let you know how it goes if i ever get round to it!

I've done that - put snap-poppers on the velcro strips on my Buffalo and Mardale pile tops and the corresponding pop-studs on a Montane and Buff expedition hood. Works rather well.

re handstitching: In my opinion it's superior for small areas. It's easier to properly fix the beginning and end to stop it coming loose and you have more control, i.e. just sewing through the outer layer etc.

re pop snappers: I fixed a button and loop to my Montane smock to stop the hood blowing away in high winds. I think it's more secure than a popper, cause it can't pop.

In reply to Removed User: I'd sew it. And in fact, I might just do that to my Montane. A tip from a wise auld winter climber was to sew any repairs with dental floss, stronger than your bog standard nylon thread.

In reply to SonyaD: Righty ho. Guess I just need to find a suitable women to carry out this mysterious procedure!

get a needle + dental floss and hope for a steep learning curve...

... and try on something you don't mind spoiling

Personally I'd go to a fabrics shop and ask for the thread they use for sewing together structural parts of rucksacks if you are that worried. Although I'm pretty sure normal thread doubled up with extra sew throughs at each end for strength will do the job, I'd suggest running up and down the length of the velcro at least two times.
