Hopefully I'll get some helpful answers amongst the p*ss taking (pun intended).

What size and sort of bottle is good for a pee bottle for an expedition? Wide mouth like a nalgene or something else?

What about technique, do you sit up in your sleeping bag or do it laying down?

Yours embarrasingly.

Wider mouthed the better, mate.

I always found that a Pepsi Max bottle was the best way fowards, cheap and you can throw it away when you've finnished with it.

I produce too much volume for a pepsi-max bottle (assuming you're on about the 500ml ones).

I used a cheapo Nalgene-type-copy in Nepal, never a better dollar spent

1ltr wide top nalgenes work well.

Laying down on your side works. Just remember to stick a finger down the inside of the bottle so that you can judge when it's about to overflow

2 Ltr plastic milk bottle.

Cheap, wide mouth and has a handle which helps avoid dropping and spilling.

If you fill that then you've been down the pub too long!

Remember a night in my mates VW Camper in Wales after a night in the pub. I was sleeping top side and after about 1/2 an hours post pub banter was busting for a piss. Now we didn't want to open the door and let the bloody midge cloud in so I asked him to pass up something to go in. A 2 litre Tesco bottle was proferred. Hung my legs over the side of the sleeping platform and happily filled the the thing with a small air gap. Seems as good as anything else I have come across.

Alternatively you could use a platypus as a catheter

In reply to Brian at work: I use a square-sided nalgene wide mouth bottle. The 'square' bit is important as all my other bottles are round; therefore no chance of using the wrong one in the dark.

In reply to DNS: Any idea where I can get a square-sided bottle (sounds like a very sensible idea to me)? I have looked everywhere for something similar. Can't find anything online or in my local shops. Cheers

Aye there good for pissing in but Its a bit tricky shitting in them bloody 2ltr pepsi bottles

In reply to Brian at work: Reasonably sure I got it from the climbers shop in Ambleside, but it would have been several years ago. It's one of the plain 'nalgene' branded ones, about 1 litre.

Reasonable idea.

My 2Ltr milk piss bottle smells of piss. This is important as all my other milk bottles don't; therefore no chance of pissing in my breakfast milk during the night.

After an impromptu session woke up in the van one morning parked on the high street bursting for a leak. Only thing I could find was a wide necked Paul Masson wine bottle, even John Holmes wouldn't get stuck in that one! Felt much better until I managed to kick it over over all over my sleeping bag (couldn't find the lid).
2 x Pepsi Max bottles would do the trick otherwise.

As a female Mountaineer I use a pringle packet.

1 get to eat them first
then use the packet after.

P.S girls need a bigger opening of course.

best sort i've used is a comfort bottle (Fabric conditioner, it's got a really wide opening, not that I'm bragging, it's got 'Comfort' written on the bottle which seems apt and it's an odd shape which makes it bloody impossible to confuse with anything else... except a bottle of fabric conditioner.

Doesn't fabric conditioner make everything soft?

I suppose that's an advantage too... it's so damned hard to go with a hard-on.

My mate with a houseboat seems to take great delight in using a big margarine tub, the contents of which she then tips out of the window.
In reply to Ian Atkinson:

she could try the following method:

A Pringles container? Doesn't it leak? Once you pop, you can't stop, eh?

I use this one:

1.5 liters seems to be okay. It's collapsible so it doesn't take that much space from the pack. You just have to be a bit more carefull when using it.

Laying down seems to be the easiest and fastest way. And you don't wake up your mate. It's a bit difficult to explain but I mean laying down "sideways".
