i am 99.99% certain the answer is yes as this is in no way load-bearing but i thought id ask: basically the harness has fixed leg loops with a bit of stretch provided by a small patch of elasticated material at the front of the leg loop where it (the leg loop) goes into one as it were.

the leg loops are slightly too tight for me but if i relax the elastic theyre perfect. i can do this permanently if i cut into the elastic but thought id check before doing this to a brand new harness. can anyone clarify? thanks

In reply to ksjs: It's not structural so yes you certainly can.

In an ideal world you would find a harness that is the correct size as having a slight bit of tension from the elastic does help with maintaining a comfortable fit on fixed leg loop designs. However, given the prices of new harnesses it is a sensible enough option.

In reply to ksjs:

where i work we use petzl harnesses and some of the guides attach their own extra gear loops.
the opportunity came up one time so we asked about it and they simply said it would void any warranty and maybe therefore affect an insurance claim if you had an accident wearing it, depending on how full on the insurance company went into it.

im just saying.

I've done this with my CAMP harness. Can't see any problems. Unlike Mark, I don't like to feel my leg loops tight against me - makes me feel fat - but of course that's why they're tight...

In reply to ksjs: As long as you don't care about voiding your warranty?

Yes.

In reply to Mark Stevenson: i wanted the hirundos due to weight; the compromise is fixed leg loops. i tried the small and medium, the medium is best but not perfect 'out of the box' hence need for modification.

In reply to JTM: im the same, i just find it annoying, i want to know theyre in the right place but not squeezing my hulking (not) thighs...

In reply to neil the weak: no, and i dont see how it would void the warranty: its a piece of elastic and has zero impact on the strength of the harness.

thanks to all for replies, i shall now go forth and cut.

In reply to ksjs: I agree. It is perfectly safe to do. The reason it'll stuff your warranty is because (generally and I'm pretty sure this would be the case with Petzl) your warranty will state on it that it is invalidated if personally modify the equipment in any way.

Lets face it though you're not going to need it anyway, how many harnesses go faulty really?

In reply to neil the weak: yeah, they seem pretty indestructible though i think it'll take me a bit of time to get used to the ultra skinny belay loop on the hirundos, its like 0.5cm wide!
