Shoes splitting

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the soles of their shoes (Boreal Lynx) splitting? I have had 2 pairs split identically from a couple of centimetres in from the toe back for about  7cm. Have I just been unlucky or is this a known fault? They have been replaced but I'm intrigued about why this is happening.
