hey guys!

Recently bought a pair of superfeet insoles for my scarpa omegas. got the right size of heel-cup (size G), but Im concerned that maybe my feet arent suited to the design of the insoles. My feet are about a size 11, which I think may be a bit small if anything for these insoles, as the arch support feels very far forward. walked into coire fee the other day in the insoles, and although on the walk in they were ok (a tad uncomfortable, but apparently thats to be expected), as soon as I started kicking steps and climbing, my feet were in agony. its almost as though they cut off the blood to the front of my foot. numb toes and painful balls (of my FEET!! lol) caused my to remove the insoles and spend the rest of the day without them.
will I "grow into" these insoles?? or is it worth taking them back under the 60 day guarantee??

cheers,

BOS

I think you know the answer already! Take um back!

In reply to BallsOfSteel: If they are unusably painful then what's the point of keeping them?
In reply to BallsOfSteel:

You have my sympathy but it seems to me you made a bad judgement call on buying them and have no grounds to take them back: there is nothing wrong with the insoles that makes this the responsibility of the manufacturers or sellers.

My mate had a similar problem on a 3month exped, he kept on wearing them until his feet were covered in pus filled blisters. My advice: take em back, stop wearing them.

In reply to BallsOfSteel:

Insoles can change the way you stand and walk and it can take time for your feet, ankles, knees, hip and back to get used to the new posture, so pains in any of the aforementioned are (almost) to be expected. Hence, you should break-in insoles, e.g. day 1=use for 1 hour, day 2=use for 2 hours etc.

Ideally insoles should be custom made by a specialist to suit the way you walk (you may not necessary need them), depending if you pronate or supernate.

Superfeet did give me pains in the base of heels when I first used them. I've now had custom made inserts by a muscular/skeletal specialist to correct a joint problem.

I think they guarentee them to be an improvement.

A pity you haven't got feet of steel, you could have saved yourself a few quid. How much are superfeet anyway?

expensive! bought mine a Tiso's for £35. I was told before purchase that if for ANY reason they didnt suit me or I wasnt happy, I could take em back, regardless of whether they'd been ct to size or not....which I found remarkably accomodating, considering that the insoles are of no re-sale use to the company upon return. will go in tomorrow maybe and see whats what.

Best to break them in properly - one day out will not be enough!! LOL.
In reply to L.A.:

Fair enough. I hereby retract!

35 quid, f*ckin hell. I imagine quite a few people aren't happy then.
In reply to CurlyStevo:

So it seems. Didn't know that. In which case, by all means take em back.

In reply to martin heywood: Superfeet cured me of this horrible pain I used to get in the balls of my feet after a day in the hills regardless of what boots I was wearing. Bought my first pair in 2000 and bought a second pair maybe 5 years back, and just swap them between whatever shoes I'm wearing. Haven't had that pain once since, and don't get shin splints jogging any more either. So if they work for you they are well worth the money, and if they don't you have that no question asked return policy which seems pretty good as well.

In reply to BallsOfSteel: Which colour did you get?

Green take the most getting used to, then blue, then black....Its all to do with the depth of the heel and the size the arch they are creating in the foot. (I think, I went on a training day a few years ago when working for field and trek. I was given green ones and they felt a little funny to say the least)

They do get better, and some people think they are great. I am still unsure!

You have size 11 feet and went for a size G?!? That's your problem right there, they're designed for size 13.5 to 15! No wonder it's all a bit far forward. I take it your omegas are a 46, so take them back and swap thenm for a size F, in Green. That's the one to go for. I have 3 pairs of Superfeet, so I can fit them into all my shoes and boots, can hardly use shoes without them these days...
 Paulcmountain 01 Feb 2010
In reply to Paulcmountain: maybe even a size E

In reply to BallsOfSteel:
how long have you had the Omegas? I've got Omegas, and couldn't use Superfeet with them, which I did with older boots. I found the instep of the boots quite high, and that combined with the high instep of the superfeet caused problems (painful). I found I could get the boots to fit best with a combination of insoles from other boots/shoes, and they are great now.

In reply to BallsOfSteel:

The sizing in terms of uk foot size is relatively meaningless. The main thing is to have the heel size correct and then both the flex point and insole can be trimmed to the right size. £35 is a hell of a lot for insoles but they provide way more support than everything that is not prescribed.

The superfeet do take a while to get used to as you foot is forced to deal with a very different shape and support style. I'd try them for (as said before) an hour the first day, two the next.....etc. If you do just dive in straight away with the insoles there is a risk that you can do some damage to your feet.

If you found the Greens a little too uncomfortable I'd swap them for the less aggressive Blues instead. If you are still getting I'd take them into whatever shop you bought them from and talk to the trained guys there.

In reply to BallsOfSteel:

As mentioned, the fit is all about the heel cup, and not the length. Ignore the numbers, it's all about the letters. Get someone to fit it properly (the right colour, and the right size), as it sounds like the OP did all that, therefore the shop will certainly take them back on the 60 day comfort guarantee.

However I would say that the problem the OP had is with the combination of Superfeet and Omegas (did you get them thermo moulded with the Superfeet in?), and possibly the tight instep of the Omega shell.

They may not work with those boots, but if you want to persist with them for the benefits which they can give (not to everyone, but to a lot of people), then maybe try them with a different item of footwear.

Oh, and use up a bit more of the 60 days.

In reply to BallsOfSteel:
I started wearing moulded insoles acouple of years ago in all of my shoes/boots due to foot problems. The first day was agony. This soon wore off. Now I wouldn't be without them.
Wear them in your day shoes for a week before you next put them in your boots.

aye, I feel i have a similar problem. it felt as though the support for the arch of the foot was placing loads of pressure on the instep, and i got the same numb and painful feeling I remember getting when I used to tie my boots too tight, no matter how loose I laced them. perhaps they're not well suited to my feet and the omegas, which fit fine with normal insoles. Havent had the boots long...spose its all a case of slowly working out what works best for me. Will try the insoles out in my work boots, see if I come round to them. cheers for everyones help!

In reply to BallsOfSteel: Did you get them fitted, or just buy them off the shelf?

I got my first pair of greens fitted (at Snow and Rock in bristol I think) and because of my forward (or is it backward?) arch I needed bigger ones than my foot size and trimmed to fit. Found a shop in the US that sold them at $10 a pair, so bought about 6 and trimmed them to size and now use them in just about all my outdoor footwear (apart from rockshoes!) and never had any probms with them at all.

In reply to Chris F:
I just found that my heels are quite large, but my foot isnt hugely long. hence, I needed the G heel cup size, but had to trim the foam fronts to practically the plastic former, which i was told would be ok byt the person who served me....
Gadget Girl 02 Feb 2010
In reply to BallsOfSteel: As someone above said, this is why they don't fit. Yes, the heel cups do play a huge part, but the position of the instep is related to length, and with the length being too long, and needing loads trimming off, the instep on the G is far too far forward for your foot. This is why you're getting so many problems and numbness. Go back and change them for an F and I bet the problem will disappear. Alternatively, as I mentioned on this thread [http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=392881&v=1#x5665264 ] try Salford insoles which are far kinder and more ergonomic but will correct your posture and foot shape for all day comfort, and less strain on your knees and hips.

Sounds like mine, just more extreme.

G cup!! WOOF!!!!! hahahahaha sorry...

A friend of mine once got some of these and they did feel uncomfy to begin with, but not in the feet, it hurt his hips, so the posture reallignment must have been quite considerable! He perservered and ended up loving them though. Sounds to me like you should first swap them for a smaller size, then give them another go. But maybe just go for a walk around town first rather than doing anything prolonged?!
Good luck,

In reply to BallsOfSteel: Superfeet aren't for everyone, some people just don't get along with them, especially when their feet are too far off the normal foot which I would say yours are. You should probably have gone for customs straight away, ask the shop if they take them back if there is no difference to the agony after you've used them a little more.

I'm very happy with my orange superfeet, it's amazing how comfortable it makes my lower legs and knees feel as soon as I stand with them.
