Melting snow on alpine expeds?

What do people reccommend? We can't get the cartridges for jetboil where I live, so what else works well?

Cheers, JH

As you can't fly with propane butane cartridges, most people buy them when they get to the alps anyway. Although if you wanted to use the stove at home it might be worth looking in a hardware store for propane butane blowtorch cannisters, which also fit. You would need to hang the jetboil up though, because the blowtorch cannisters are tall and thin.

Personally I much prefer the convenience of gas to petrol, but I have used an MSR to melt snow in the alps, and it worked just fine.

I swear by my MSR XGK.

- burns pretty much any fuel (even diesel though it's hard to light)
- efficient and fast
- light
- very robust

It also doesn't conk out at altitude as some are prone to, though in the Alps you should be ok with most.

Having said that, I think I do get biased towards bits of kit that have both served well and been greta places with me - I'm sure my mate would swear by his gas canister stove though I think he'd admit it was less robust and the canisters are a pain.

In reply to Moacs: I have never had problems with Prop/But mix at Alpine altitudes. The MSR pocket rocket works fine for melting snow, it is small, light (80ish grams) and cheap (£30). The gas in easily available in Chamonix and I presume most areas of the Alps.

I meant 6500-7000m - I saw a number of canister type stoves give up, whereas the petrol ones seemed to keep going.

As I said, nothing against canister stoves, especially for Alpine or lower.

Jetboil. Awesome bit of kit-been used at that altitude by Emmett and Parnell last year and also by Kenton Cool on 8000m peaks. I'll be using one on Ama Dablam in October.

MSR Firefly is the best lightweight, controllable stove on the market.

You do realise you don't need "Jetboil" cartridges don't you?
The Jetboil will run off the same standard propane/butane cyllinders as a Pocket Rocket or other small gas stoves (but not camping Gaz). The smallest Coleman cyllinders fit into the Jetboil cup for transport, but all 3 sizes work fine and although taller are still stable.

I'd second the pocket rocket. Awesome power to weight ratio.

Never used a jetboil so can't compare but am always impressed by my pocket rocket whenever it's used.

In reply to JH:

yeah, use your jetboil and find somewhere to buy the canisters from. If you're going to Chamonix or any of the other popular euro alpine places you should have no problem finding them.
