30-50km hike suggestions please

I'm after some suggestions for a mooch with my team at work.  Caveat - I'm fully capable and happy with nav (ML, Spine finishes etc) and my team (only 6 of us) is all fairly fit and healthy and keen.  We have done the Y3P twice and that was about the right level of difficulty/duration.

I'm after ideas for a decent day out, ideally within 1-2hrs of Manchester.  Could be a really lumpy 30km, or a flatter 50km, or somewhere in between.

I've got loads of ideas of great loops that we can do... however my team are keen to do a known named kind of a thing, a bit like the 3P or Y3P etc.  I think the Welsh 3000s is probably a bit ambitious for them with the logistics, but something along those lines.

All ideas are very welcome - thanks!

You could park in bethesda and go up Carnedd Dafydd via the Mynydd Du ridge (really nice) , then Yr Elen, Carnedd Llewellyn, Pen yr Helgi Du, Tryfan, Glyders, Y Garn, Mynydd Perfedd, Carnedd Y Filiast, then descend west for a bit then north-west to pick up the national slate trail back to Bethesda.

If it's a regular thing, you could do one of the big ones in stages?

A chunk of the Bob Graham round?

Or to put it another way, join a couple of these together? http://www.walkingenglishman.com/walkingthewainwrights.html
Or same idea but a bit of the Pennine way? Slate trail?

Thanks - that sounds like a great idea, and definitely something that I'll take a look at on my tod!  But the work gang really want a known, named thing - lame i know, but hey ho, at least they want to get out into the hills!

Maybe too easy or too obvious, but how about Marsden to Edale? If your team are Manchester based, there’s the advantage of a pub at the end and the train home.

LOVE THIS - not heard of it before, looks great!  Possibly a touch ambitious for my work crew, but 100% added to my to do list!

Sandstone trails is ~50Km with quite a bit of variety,  no mountains though.

Derwent Watershed is a bit longer than you want  (65k)but covers a lot of the Dark Peak and is a memorable day's walk. Not much ascent but rough going in places.Circular so you can choose your starting point . ( Yorkshire Bridge when I did it)  Definitely a named kind of thing.

A bit beyond your distance, but this is a very special experience…

Edit: with north east England looking set to enter once-in-a-decade level drought conditions (or worse), 2025 is the year to do it…

Rossendale Way? Maybe a bit long at 64km? It's very interesting if you like industrial heritage. Great views too.

The Wharfedale Three Peaks is a brilliant route (much nicer than that other three peaks).

Bonus points if you do it on 28th June, when it's the annual fund raiser for Upper Wharfedale MRT.

The full Langdale horseshoe is quite pleasant on a weekday and not in july or august.

You can do something similar from from Glenridding up Helvellyn and head south, cross the road and head north. Shorter version parking at Brotherswater. (Pub lunch optional)

Or, if this is something that will happen again, part of the https://www.gmringway.org/, which covers parts of the Rossendale way, I think. Easy to arrange by Public Transport, and a great mix of some beautiful scenery with industrial heritage.

Also, if you use Entys link, and use the search function for eg, Walks 30 - 50km, it will give inspiration.

Or the Irwell Vally Sculpture Trail https://www.irwellsculpturetrail.co.uk/about-the-trail.html , Witchway Bus from Shudehill to Rawtenstall, then Bus to Bacup, and walk back, you will see much more wildlife than in Snowdonia, LD or Yorkshire Dales.

Tram out to Audenshaw. Follow the canal to Greenfield. Pub. Train back home.

Nice and flat, with the option to do Chew valley, if you've got the energy.

Or go south towards Marple. Bus back from Hazel Grove.

If you were really dedicated, you could get a pint in each pub along the way. Then get an Uber home when you couldn’t stand up.

The Peak Nine Edges route? 23 miles

 Ramblin dave 07 May 2025
In reply to ChrisJD:

Yeah, the Nine Edges and the Edale Skyline sound like good options in the Peak. Heading up to the Lakes and hence upping the ascent a bit, the Patterdale Boundary Walk, the Old Crown Round and the Woolpack Round might be worth a look.

The llanberis skyline is a beautiful route, about marathon distance with plenty of ascent. I've got a gpx file if you want it

Dark Peak county tops perhaps?

Great loop, done it myself a few times, great suggestion, but I think a touch too much for my team - aware I'm being a bit goldilocks!

Thanks - this looks fantastic  and added to my own to do list!  But a bit too long for my work team.

In reply to wintertree:

Plus one for the Lyke Wake! I know you said its too long for the work team but could you split it?

I did it over two days a few weeks ago and it was incredible. Stopped at White Lion at Blakey Ridge to break it. Cracking steak if you eat meat. Second day was so very long!

Thanks!  This was one I'd been looking at already - seems to tick most boxes.  Is it a decent loop?

Golden Lion, I think.

In reply to Pete Pozman:

Ha no we're both wrong! Just the Lion apparently https://lionblakey.co.uk/

Golden Lion is a cracking pub in Osmotherly though, and the (just) Lion inn has a stone white Lion outside of it by the beer garden.

To be honest by that point I just wanted a pint and a sit down.

Personally, I love it. The view from Buckden Pike, from the Lakes to the NY Moors, takes some beating, Birks feels quiet and remote and the final descent from Gt Whernside is brilliant (and can be done at a flat-out sprint!)

Ullswater Way maybe?

Did the Lyke Wake Way as a 13 year old with school, got out of bus at 12.00 pm to be picked up and not seen others until the end around 10 hours later, loved it, remember the sun rising over clouds which looked like snow topped mountains.

How about the 'Welsh 1000s'?

https://explore.osmaps.com/route/46849/welsh-1000m-peaks--welsh-1000m-peaks...

It's around 30-40km long (depeding on route choice), summits all the 1000m+ peaks in Wales, and is perhaps easier/less commting than the full Welsh 3000s. It's a linear route though, so logistics would need consideration.

The Gritstone Trail on the western edge of the Peak could be a good option, 56km with a train station at both ends

Thanks, yep that is a possible option I've been looking at.  When ive done it before myself I parked at Disley, train to the start, then shuffle back to the car!

Yeah it would be a very long day. We did it for our DoE and camped on the moor above Whitworth.

I stand corrected. A great place for a pint. Somehow people get "stranded" there in snow storms.
